The Flames of Florence – Florence, Italy – Somewhere In Time Weekly Travel Photo & 6 Month Retrospective.

By Posted in - Europe & Photo Stories & Somewhere In Time & Travel Blog on May 5th, 2011

Somewhere in Time is a weekly photo from around the world. Enjoy!

On a day off from the farm a few of us went to Florence for the day. If you’re going to Italy you should definitely plan on visiting Florence. It’s a beautiful city – full of amazing art, history and warmth. In my eyes it’s the perfect Italian city. If I were moving to Italy, Florence would definitely be on the list of places where I would want to live. It’s big enough to keep you entertained but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. The artists of the past seem to influence every little bit of the city. Everything seems to have it’s place in Florence and their places are just right.

We were walking back to the train station when we passed this street. The couple was standing in the light just perfectly. It was drizzling but just barely – just enough to create a bit of steam on the streets to accentuate the perfect atmosphere of love sprouting. This couple couldn’t have been more ideally placed. For me, it was as if the photographic gods came to earth and handed me this moment. It was sublime. His enchantment and nervous tension was unmistakable even from down the street. You could tell they were probably at the very beginning of what would no doubt blossom into a huge & steamy love affair. The kind you only get a couple times in life, maybe only once. And you know if you are lucky enough to have it there is nothing like it in the world. Especially in the beginning when nothing can stop it. Those flawless moments when everything in the world feels new again. Wars were fought over this type of love.

This is one of my favorite photos from Italy. The streets of Florence are so old and full of life I can’t help but wonder how many people throughout the ages walked these streets and perhaps stood in this exact spot with this very same twinkle in their eye. Nothing in the world can compare to the blushing skin and golden glow of a love affair about to burst into wild flames.

**********************************************************

On another note I’m pretty excited because today marks 6 months exactly that I have been posting a Somewhere In Time travel photo of the week. I had posted them prior but only intermittently. I’m pretty happy with myself because Somewhere In Time is actually a lot of work for me and to be honest I am really proud of these images.  They mean A LOT to me. Not just any old photo will work for this portfolio.

It’s a travel portfolio that attempts to showcase not just photos from different locations around the globe but also photos that highlight some of the emotions we experience as we travel. Some of the images are a little bit more landscape-like than others but overall the photo has to have a certain something to be included in the series. My ultimate goal is that each photograph embraces a very specific and unique one-of-a-kind moment. The kind of moment that makes you feel something and maybe even remember a certain feeling – – even if it’s something vague that you can’t quite put your finger on. I want everyone who looks at the images to linger on them, enjoy them, feel them & hopefully relate to them in one way or another.

I thought I would do a retrospective of the last 6 months because we have a lot of new readers who might be unfamiliar with what the series is and how much it means to me. Plus it’s kind of cool to have a place to view them all in one spot. I purposely saved the above photo of Florence for this post because it is one of my favorites and symbolizes, at least to me, what the Somewhere In Time Series is all about. So if you want to look at six months of Somewhere In Time just keep scrolling. Also, if you want the read the story behind any of the photos just click on the title of the photograph.

If you want to view them full width you can view them at the Somewhere In Time Travel Photo Gallery.

I hope you like them. 🙂

I’m not surprised you’re so proud of this portfolio. I would be too, if they were my photos! 🙂 I think your Oaxaca, Mexico photo is my favourite.

Thanks Julia 🙂 BTW, the Oaxaca one is def. one of my all time faves as well. 🙂@Turkey’s For Life,

I believe I already told you “a couple of times” how much I love your pictures! You manage to capture the essence of a place every time. I recently bought a wide-angle lens, can’t wait to use it, or at least learn how to 😉

    • Bethany -

      May 5, 2011 at 10:13 am

That’s one heck of a compliment! Thank you Angela 🙂 What type of lens do you normally use? @Angela,

      • Angela -

        May 6, 2011 at 11:26 am

@Bethany, I normally use a pretty lame 18-55, I also have a 70-200 and a 50mm, and I just bought Sigma 10-20. I find 70-200 sometimes limiting as I usually shoot landscapes, so I didn’t use it a lot. I’ll be going to a wedding, and I’m thinking to use or the 70-200 or the 50 one, I don’t want to change lens while there, and unfortunately I only have one camera. Which lens would you recommend? Here I didn’t bring the 18-55, and at the wedding I’d like to take photos of people especially…

        • Bethany -

          May 6, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Hmmm… Ok, I hate to say it but one lens – I’d probably go with the 18-55 for versatility.

The 70-200 will only be any use in the church and only if it’s a big church and you shoot from the back. What is the speed on it? Unless it’s a quick lens and if it’s a dark church it will be completely useless anyway. Is it a 2.8 do you know? The 50mm is an awesome lens to have for a wedding for details and portraits. I personally find it too much of a zoom for random shooting because it forces you to be quite a bit away from the subject. I use a 35mm all the time at weddings. The 10 – 20 would be AWESOME for shots on the dancefloor. Do you plan on shooting the whole wedding? If I were you, I’d bring the 18-55 and I’d sneak the 50mm or 10-20 into my bag 🙂 How do you like the 10 – 20? My normal wedding set up is 24-70 2.8, 35mm 1.8 &a fisheye or a wide angle, 2 camera bodies, 2 external flashes w/ cords.
          @Angela,

            May 6, 2011 at 4:28 pm

@Bethany, Oooo-kay! I’m in India, so no wedding church 😀
I think it will be all outside. To avoid traveling too heavy I left 18-55 at home, I know it’s versatile, but for 5 years I almost used only that and I wanted to change. The thing is that I came here for the Himalayas, so I absolutely needed a wide angle, and as 18-55 is not wide enough I bought the 10-20. The wedding is just a little stop we make before the Himalayas, but since it’s an Indian wedding, I can only imagine how many colors they will wear! That’s why I want to take pictures. I think I’ll bring all the three then, 50, 10-20 and 70-300 (sorry not 200), which is 4-5.6, and I’ll try to be careful when I change them, since unfortunately I have only one body…

            May 6, 2011 at 4:36 pm

oh wow – that’s awesome! Yup, i’d bring ’em all. From what i’ve seen of indian weddings – everything is very close up and colorful. My guess is you’ll use the wide angle and the 50 the most. If you had to leave one, i’d make it the 70-300 – Have fun – I can’t wait to see the pics!! I’ve always wanted to photograph an indian wedding!@Angela,

Beautiful photos from Florence. Indeed Florence is one of the most romantic city I ever visit. It’s so nice to walk down the street at night. Love that first shot of the couple maybe sweet talking to each other. I hear Florence is the City of Love & Art. Your photos capture it.

Bethany, you definetely have a talent there, and have put together a great array of images from your recent travels. Very creative in the way they are captured, and I think I can learn a little from the way you have used your HDR and blurring to portray the subjects of each image. Good stuff….

Great shot! And I know exactly where it was taken!!! I never really thought of Florence as my city but lately I have been getting a real sense of pride when people talk about it. I’m glad you guys enjoyed it!

Happy anniversary to Somewhere In TIme! I absolutely love the feature, I look forward to you photos every week. You are definitely favorite photographer in the travel world. I absolutely love your work!

You know what’s funny? I was thinking of you when I put the picture up! I was hoping you would see it because I always think how lucky you are that you lived there! That is crazy you know the street – do you know the name? I’m glad you like the series too – it makes me so happy that you look forward to it every week – at least I know I’m not the only one. 🙂 Thanks for teh amazing compliment as well! @Annie,

@Bethany, I could be totally wrong on this but I THINK it is off the main street leading between the Duomo and Piazza Signoria? I’m bad with street names but I think it’s Via Calzaiuoli. There are lots of little cute side streets with shops and cafes around there.

I’m honored that you thought of me when you put this up! 😀

Your style is elegant, glamourous and romantic. Please please tell me you are going to show, or have shown in a gallery. And tell me you are selling prints of your work?

If not, I hope you do all of the above. Good art IMO leaves so much to the viewer to bring their own emotions into it (as you said).

    Your work does that seamlessly.

I’d like to believe I paint with words.

My dear, you paint with your camera. Mazel tov!

      May 6, 2011 at 3:49 pm

You do paint with words! I always love your posts! Maybe some day we can do a collaboration! I haven’t had a gallery show in a really long time but I should probably get back into it at some point. I do sell them on Etsy but I haven’t sold one yet. I just don’t spend enough time on there or relist them often enough. My sister puts the time in on her shop and she make a ton of money there! I know i need to do it but there are only so many hours in a day. hahaha here’s the etsy shop though http://www.etsy.com/shop/NarikosNest?ref=si_shop@Nomadic Chick,

Thanks Angela 🙂 The greatest advice I can give you is shoot when no one else is. That’s when the magic usually happens. – This is especially true at a wedding. The moments after and before the real photos are when the real moments come to life. Try it & tell me how it works for you. 🙂@Angela,
