Discovering True Luxury at a Hotel in Scotland

Now, I’m not saying I’m not familiar with luxury. I’m a girl who likes to dabble in all things posh, believe me. Last week, for example, I bought myself a packet of dark chocolate coated hobnobs and a bottle of Pinot, gave myself a pedicure and watched Some Like it Hot. Oh yes, my trolley is always full of Tesco finest, apart from the chopped tomatoes and stuff, you know. At the end of the day, how poshly can you really chop a tomato? Anyway, when my boyfriend told me he’d booked us in to a five star hotel in Scotland, I was pretty sure I knew what to expect.

Well, forget dark chocolate coated hobnobs. Gold plated ones would perhaps be more apt. For starters, the hotel looked a bit like Downtown Abbey, and I half expected ladies in bonnets to rush over and offer to carry my trunk and parasol. As it was, our bags were carried in by some very smart young men who didn’t bat an eyelid when I took our lord’s name in vain after scuffing my Jimmy Choo on the edge of a cherub.

When we got to our room I must admit I felt a bit like Julia Roberts in pretty woman (that sounds a bit wrong. I’d like to clarify that I wasn’t wearing a wig). My boyfriend had booked us into an Estate Room which is basically like an extremely posh flat. The king sized bed was great and the first thing I did was tuck Brutus and Shirley (my lucky Beanie Babies) under the extremely fluffy duvet.

My boyfriend was up for trying all the activities, which were the kinds of things you imagine Price William doing on a typical Saturday: shooting, fishing, falconry- that kind of stuff. There was even something called a Gundog School which gave me strange images of military pooches in camo, so I didn’t check that one out. I did have a go at the falconry. Incredibly beautiful birds, but I was never quite convinced that they wouldn’t mistake my finger for a piece of bacon. It must be hard for birds to tell the difference, mustn’t it? My thing was definitely the club, which included swimming pools, spa and an outdoor hot pool. There was also a hair salon and nail bar, so I was in my element. If you’ve never heard of a hair ceremony, as I sure hadn’t, give it a go. Far from sacrificing your hair to the Pagan gods of fertility or some such ritual, this is actually a tailor made treatment incorporating massage and treatments that are specific to your hair type. I felt thoroughly royal by the end of it, I can tell you.

We had a choice of four restaurants from Mediterranean to top notch grub cooked by a chef with two Michelin stars. They didn’t even seem to mind when I asked for mayonnaise with my smoked lobster.
