3 Free Things To Do in NYC in Spring 2012.
New York’s a flavorful city, and I’m just not talking about the hot dog stands and high end bistros of Manhattan. There’s something for everyone in the Big Apple and the spring season is one of the best times to get out and experience why NYC is one of the world’s best travel destinations.
With the warming temperatures and longer days, spring is a welcome relief to many New Yorkers, freeing them the grey winter doldrums that plague the city and keep most people inside and bundled up. During the spring the green and color return to the city and the avenues and parks come alive with activity, so if you are planning to visit NYC then, you may as well look for one of the city’s great value apartments from companies like Wimdu instead of an overpriced hotel or condo, because you will only be using the place to eat and sleep. While there are hundreds of things to do in New York during the spring, these are my three top picks.
1. Take a stroll through the Hester Street Fair
Every weekend, this Lower East Side market offers up the best of vintage clothing, retro jewelry, antique jewelry and more, as well as a fantastic collection of food vendors, which includes Pies ‘n’ Thighs, Ample Hills Creamery and Prohibition Bakery.
Details:
- Hester St at Essex St
- Opening Day April 28
- Sat 10am–6pm
2. Go Aggro at Pillow Flight NYC
Five years ago Pillow Fight NYC went global, and, like The Simpsons, they’ll still haven’t grown up. Last year, 5,000 pillow armed New Yorkers battled it out in Union Square in a plush royal rumble of sorts. This year the event, which coincides with the seventh annual International Pillow Fight Day, occurs the day before Easter, so this is the Bunny Edition with points being to floppy ears and PJs, just make sure to leave the elegant feather pillows at home; they are just too darn messy! 🙂 .

- Location TBA,

- Apr 7 at 3pm; free.
3. Celebrate Top Gun Day on the volleyball court
Maverick or Goose? Which one are you? Well, on May 13, you can join other oiled- up shirtless men wearing tight 80s denim jeans and aviator glasses at the sand volleyball court in Central Park. Additionally, there is an asphalt court, which requires players to use there own net, for those who like it a little rough. The two courts are first come, first served.
Details:
- East of Sheep Meadow, enter at Central Park West and 66th St.
- P: 212-310-660
- daily 6am–1am; free
Without a doubt there are a lot of affordable city breaks in New York— especially NYC–in the spring, so there is no excuse to start planning now for your spring getaway. If you’re looking for more free events in NYC be sure to check out NewMindSpace which organizes free and fun events all across NYC and the US..
And for those of you who are long term planners, why not think drinking wine in Tuscany this fall or touring Riveria Maya this summer.
Where’s you favorite spring getaway?

While I love to travel, my favorite Spring location is actually wherever I am living. I love the feeling of rebirth, of a new start and a chance to get outside after the winter. It feels like a new place and thus in some ways a trip. Perhaps I need to move to someplace with less harsh winters.
