Editor’s note: We had a chance to catch up with Christy Woodrow, who recently launched OT Surf, a sports swimwear and eco-friendly clothing line, with her boyfriend Scott Calafiore. Beth and I have been fans and avid readers of the couple’s popular travel blog, Ordinary Traveler, for a while now, so when we found out that they were debuting OT Surf on Kickstarter (another one of our favorite sites) we just had to find out more about the project and the killer video they put together for its launch.

Christy and Scott are trying to raise $15,000 by April 2, 2012 by pre-selling bikinis and t-shirts. If they reach their goal of $15,000, then they will go into production and start shipping bikinis! Click here to pre-order now. And remember, what makes Kickstarter so cool is that it runs on the all-or-nothing funding approach, so if you pre-order a bikini now and they don’t reach their $15,000 goal, you will be refunded 100% of your money!

Congrats on the launch! How did you guys come up with the idea for OT Surf?

The idea behind OT Surf came about after numerous frustrating surf sessions. I can’t even tell you how much money I have spent trying to find a decent bikini. My solution in the past was to just buy bikini bottoms that were one or two sizes too small in order to keep them on in the water. Many times that didn’t even work and it didn’t look too flattering either.

I came up with an idea and really all I wanted was for someone, ANYONE, to make a surf bikini that wouldn’t fall off when surfing. One day, last May, I prepared an email to send off to one of the biggest swimwear companies on the market. I was ready to press the send button and give them my idea so that I could finally have a functional bikini! Luckily, Scott came home and knocked some sense into me.

“Let’s just make the bikini,” he said.

Which brings us to now, ten months later, and we have finally perfected a sports bikini that is both sexy and secure.

What are three things that set the OT Surf Bikini apart from the sea of other bikinis in the surf shop?

– Our bikinis are made in the USA and we strive to use recycled and recyclable materials without sacrificing quality.

– Each bikini is completely adjustable and we use a unique blend of materials in order to limit the amount of stretch. The side-tying drawstring gives you the ability to create your perfect fit.

– OT Surf’s sports bikini top is also adjustable with a criss-cross design that limits the pressure put on the back of the neck and gives you one less tie to worry about coming undone. If that tie does come undone, it’s not as catastrophic as a conventional two-tie bikini.

As avid travelers, did your experiences on the road play any part in the bikini’s design?

We know the value of packing light as travelers, so bringing multiple bikinis is not practical. We also realize not everyone is a surfer, so we wanted to create a bikini for all different kinds of travel and water sport adventures.

You guys chose to launch OT Surf through Kickstarter, how does that work?

We are trying to raise $15,000 by April 2, 2012 by pre-selling bikinis and t-shirts on Kickstarter. If we reach our goal of $15,000, then they will go into production and start shipping bikinis! However, if you pre-order a bikini now and we don’t reach our $15,000 goal, you will be refunded 100% of your money and, unfortunately, nobody will get to enjoy these bikinis!  So make sure you pre-order on Kickstarter before April 2nd! 🙂  Thanks for your support!

@Ayngelina, I couldn’t agree more. Kickstarter is very cool! BTW loved your review of the bikini. 🙂

I love the fact that the bikini top crosses the back instead of tying behind the neck – typically those bikini types give me a neck-ache because of the constant pressure, and it’s difficult to find alternative designs.

Love the idea behind OT Surf!

@Christy @ Technosyncratic, Beth said the same thing when she saw the design too. 🙂 Fingers crossed OT Surf gets funded.
