Chicago is one of the most exciting cities in America, boasting world-famous architecture, diverse culture and a myriad of attractions and places of interest for locals and travelers alike.  However, before you think of making the journey to the ‘Windy City’, be sure to check out the range of cheap hotels in Chicago.

Millennium Park

Millennium Park, located in the Loop community area of downtown Chicago, is a microcosm of the city’s verve for architecture and the arts.  The 24.5-acre area combines monumental sculptures and landscape design with an array of free cultural programs.  The iconic Cloud Gate (‘The Bean’) and Crown Fountain are just two of the popular attractions.  Family activities, concerts, exhibitions and tours are commonplace all year round.

Navy Pier

A trip to Chicago would not be complete without a visit to the Navy Pier, which has been a treasured landmark in the Midwest since it opened almost a century ago.  Stretching across 1.5 miles of the Chicago River, the popular destination houses a 150-foot Ferris wheel, Chicago Children’s Museum, an indoor botanical park, a variety of entertainment and a collection of shopping boutiques and restaurants.

Educational Experiences

Chicago features a selection of the most renowned institutions in the country.  The Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Alder Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, Lincoln Park Zoo and the Art Institute of Chicago are all ideal for an educational day out.  The Chicago Architecture Foundation, located opposite Millennium Park, is also on hand with lectures and tours for travellers who want to find out more about the city that gave birth to the skyscraper.

Best of the Rest

The Magnificent Mile, located between Michigan Avenue and Oak Street, is at the epicentre of Chicago’s shopping experience; it has almost 500 stores set across eight city blocks.  Travellers with a head for heights are also spoilt for choice in Chicago.  The Willis Tower (Skydeck Chicago) is the tallest building in the United States and provides breathtaking views of the city and neighbouring Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.  However, the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center, the second tallest building in the city, offers equally stunning views without the hoards of tourists and higher price tag associated with its bigger brother.

Chicago-Style Dining

Chicago is brimming with world-renowned eateries.  The Progressive Dining Tour allows you to taste the culinary delights of the city by frequenting three restaurants, each serving up hors d’oeuvres, main course and dessert.  A more traditional experience can be found by visiting the array of fine-dining eateries.  North Pond, One Sixty Blue, Alinea and Everest are ideal for a romantic evening out.  Those hoping to sample Chicago’s sacred institution of deep-dish pizza should visit Pizzeria Uno and Pizzeria Due.

There are a variety of shows and events on offer in Chicago.  Broadway in Chicago headlines the evening entertainment with mega-hit musicals and world premières showcased in a collection of venues situated in and around the popular Loop area.  Chicago truly comes to life during Memorial Day weekend (between May 27-May 30) when a variety of outdoor events are held to celebrate summer.  North Michigan Avenue is the most popular destination during this time, though a variety of beach, sports, neighbourhood and arts initiatives can be found throughout the city.
