*This is a guest post from one of our UK readers.
If there is one thing Great Britain does, and does well it’s winter, and in January the thought of going holidaying anywhere other than a sweltering desert may seem at the very least a tad counterintuitive.
However, let me put forward to you, dear reader, the following image – a local village pub, a hearty three course meal, beers by a roaring pub fire, wrapping up warm for the short walk back to your holiday cottage and then waking to the slightly frost-bitten majesty of some of Britain’s most dramatic countryside.
Tell me that is less appealing than your central-heated two bedroom semi.
With that in mind, and without further ado, allow me to present my guide to some of the best winter cottage holidays in the UK.
Haworth, Bronte Country
Panoramic views of the Yorkshire dales famed rugged and wild scenery. Ancient cobbled streets give the impression of a village that time almost forgot. Local attractions include the famous Worth Valley Railway, where ‘The Railway Children’ was filmed, as well as the Bronte Parsonage Museum, East Riddlesden Hall and the Museum of Rail.
Church Stretton
Situated on the England and Welsh border, not a million miles away from Shrewsbury and Wolvehampton, sits the walkers paradise of Church Stretton. Renown for its ancient rock formations, Churst Stretton hosts the Walking Festival every string. Amazing Panoramic views can be found at the top of Long Mynd, looming above the town (a shuttle bus runs to the top at weekends for those not as fond of the climb) while in town cosy tearooms and public inns are abound to help you warm back up in the evenings.
Seahouse Cottages, Northumberland
One of the best bases from which to explore Northumberland’s amazing heritage coastline, Seahouses is a popular seaside town in the heart of the north east. During the summer, Farne Islands nearby is a home to a variety of seabirds from puffing’s to shafts and eiders to guillemots, and in the winter the seals move in to breed. Back in town, Seahouses fishermen have an excellent reputation, and a reasonable walk along the costal path will take you to the spectacular Bamburg Castle.

One of the most famous and picturesque villages in the spectacular New Forest National park, the historic village of Beauliue is surrounded by 150 miles of magnificent woodland full of tiny picturesque villages, ponies, deer and cattle. Just down the road is Exbury Gardens, and for those willing to trek a few more miles can find the ferry to the Isle of Wight.
