A Guide to El Gouna.
Today’s guest post is from one of our UK readers.
For an amazing retreat to somewhere a little better than the average Red Sea hotel, head to somewhere a little bit more upmarket. El Gouna is a high-end retreat for wealthy Egyptians and Europeans, right on the coast of the Red Sea, and is a perfect place to relax and be pampered. This is the place to go for a holiday experience of Egypt that’s a little off the beaten track, but not so much so that going there necessitates a phrase book. El Gouna is up-and-coming and won’t stay off the tourist radar for too much longer.
Visiting the Red Sea? Don’t forget to visit El Gouna!

The main attractions are the town’s proximity to both desert and beaches. The road to town is lined with sand dunes the colour of a sunrise; deep red and orange, the desert forms a stunning backdrop to the gorgeous resort. The coastline of El Gouna offers up spectacular views of the Red Sea, and is spiked by inlets and lagoons. The town’s architecture is reminiscent of an Arabian Venice with its arches, bridges, canals and cobbled streets. Strictly speaking, the town is simply stunning. This is the perfect setting for a romantic weekend away or for nature lovers to bask in typical Egyptian beauty. Explore the lanes and bazaars, pick up traditional souvenirs, wander the beaches and venture out a little into the desert for some truly amazing photos and memories.
The location of the town makes it a nice base to explore other Egyptian sites of interest, such as the ancient temples of Luxor and Aswan, or to make a trip into the desert in the care of Bedouin guides. Being only a few hours away from Hurghada International Airport makes this a very easy place to reach – and thus, a great option for a quick trip away as well as a holiday.

El Gouna offers many hotels for a town of its size and a thriving local community. Downtown Kafr El Gouna is a bustling metropolitan area, complete with shops, restaurants, bars, health clubs and even an aquarium; for the shopper or for the couple in pursuit of relaxation, there is a wide variety of options here. The other part of the city, the marina town Abu Tig Marina, is little more upmarket for those looking to indulge during their trip. The marina also offers boat trips out into the Red Sea and is home to businesses that help arrange day trips away to places of interest in Egypt.

A spectacular golf course is a star feature of the town, designed with every level of player in mind and boasting a full provision of facilities for the avid golfer. Diving and swimming in the Red Sea is an absolute must: the hard part is deciding which beach to use. El Gouna is a Middle Eastern vista and a true paradise. Natural splendour and rejuvenating luxury combine incredibly well in this bustling town, and is well worth the visit. Be entranced by the best of Egypt; visit El Gouna.
