A Right Royal Holiday: A royal wedding trip to London.
Who could have missed the recent prenuptials in London? 1.1 million tourists flooded the streets of the capital, bringing with them a very welcome £5 million to the city’s purse, along with Union Jack flags and all manner of tacky royalist memorabilia. If you weren’t lucky enough to make it on Catherine and Wills big day, but are planning to take a trip over the Channel in the coming year – here’s a whistle stop, right royal guide to London town.
Visit: Westminster Abbey
Every woman’s dream marital ceremony destination – Westminster Abbey is the place that the couple tied the knot and sealed the deal with their official kiss, making them the sixteenth royal couple to wed at the abbey. The Abbey is open for tours throughout the week, with beautiful little gardens and a museum on the cards, as well as the chance to walk the very isle that Kate and Wills tripped down on the 29 April 2011. Take a trip round the corner to the Horse Guards Parade for a bit of pomp.
Visit: Buckingham Palace
Horse drawn carriages aren’t common on the London transport landscape, but take a ride in a shiny black London carriage cab down The Mall and right up to the gates of Buckingham Palace. The official destination of the Royal Wedding reception and one of the city’s biggest and most popular tourist destinations, Buckingham Palace isn’t open to the public but the sheer magnitude of Queenies pile is pretty impressive, plus trying to get the guards to smile is always a great way to wile away an afternoon.
Visit: Kensington Palace
The home of Charles and Diana, post their own royal matrimony celebrations of 1982, Kensington Palace is believed to be the residence of choice for the newly wed Kate and Wills. The Palace has been a royal residence since the 17th Century and today is open to the public, as well as playing home to real life princes and princesses. The estate is currently in the throes of a £12 million restoration project which is aiming to deliver a top class peek into the lives of the rich and influential, with new visitor entrance and hub, learning and outreach spaces and four new visitor routes.
Shop: Harrods
Stash lots of travel money and take yourself off to the poshest and most royally accredited department store in the world. Located in the royal refines of Kensington, Harrods carried the royal seal for a staggering number of years, plus the Diana and Dodi relationship adds another royal feather to it’s visitor attraction bow.
Stay: The Ritz
What could be more royal than spending the night at The Ritz on Piccadilly, just by St James Park, and therefore a mere skip and hop over to old Buckers Palace for a cuppa in the morning. Styled in the Louix XVI manner and serving up some of the most delectable English afternoon teas, this is the ideal place to rub shoulders with the super rich and minor royalty of London town.
