In the middle of St. Mark’s Square in Venice lies the Campanile. The bell tower was originally built in the 9th century but was damaged by fire and earthquakes throughout the years. It has been restored several times in it’s life but in 1902 it finally collapsed. Personally I think it’s impressive that anything could last that long.
The work to reconstruct it was completed in 1912 and it was created to look exactly like the original. It has marble pillars and five bells in the belfry. Each bell is used for a different purpose – from proclaiming the end of the work day to announcing executions. A golden weathervane of the archangel Gabriel guards the Campanile from above.
The last day we were in Venice we happened to be strolling around St. Mark’s Square right around sunset. I decided to go to the top to see if I could get some photos of Venice from above while Randy stayed below. As I got to the top I walked around a bit peeking through the windows at some of the views. I spotted this couple overlooking the city and immediately they grabbed my eye. It could’ve been the warm light pouring in through the windows or the ageless way they seemed so comfortable with each other. Were they on their honeymoon? Perhaps they had met the night before? I wasn’t sure. But to enjoy an astonishing view of a timeless city in the arms of your affection can’t be a bad way to end the daylight hours.
I took two quick photos and then walked around to find my own window to watch the sun slowly fade over Venice.

Now, *that* is an unusual angle for a Campanile! Rarely we see the inside, well done on thinking about it. And great shot, as usual 🙂
Well Angela – I’m really glad you like it! I personally love this photo but figured w/ the lack of comments that it wasn’t very popular. I know it’s not the typical photo of the campanile but really how many photos of the outside can you look at? Once I saw this scene, I knew this one would be my favorite. I’m feeling better knowing that someone else likes it as well. 🙂 @Angela,
@Bethany, I totally agree, especially the Campanile in Piazza San Marco in Venice, how many times and under how many angles has been photographed?!

I agree! Even though this was rebuilt in the early 1900’s it looks exactly the same as the original so it really makes you wonder how many people went up there throughout the centuries and what they did up there. I always get caught up in my imagination with things like that! @Angela,
