Majorca offers a variety of attractions to cyclists

A cycling holiday is the perfect way to really explore a country, getting away from the main tourist spots and out into the real, everyday life of your destination. Majorca has long been a popular destination for cyclists, who flock to the island for the warm climate, well-signposted and quiet back roads, rugged scenery, beautiful beaches and picturesque village rest-stops.

As well as being a favourite training ground for seasoned cyclists, the island is also suited for more leisurely bike touring, with a huge number of routes to choose from and some high-quality accommodation around at good prices. From the historic capital Palma to the coastal towns and small villages dotting the countryside, Majorca’s winding roads provide cyclists with beautiful scenery to complement some challenging climbs and flying descents.

Pollenca (also spelled Pollensa), in the far north of the island, is a great town to make a base for your cycling trip. Narrow medieval streets and 17th/18th Century houses give the town rustic character, and the bars and cafes in its central square, the Plaça Major, are perfect for unwinding in after a day’s hard cycling. Self-catering Pollenca apartment holidays are a popular option, but there are also a great range of hotels, bed and breakfasts and hostels there.

Pollenca lies within reach of one of the island’s toughest, but most rewarding cycle routes, out to the peninsula Cap de Formentor – the most northerly point on Majorca. The ride takes in a few challenging climbs, then down and on to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula. The ride back requires even experienced cyclists to dig deep. A refuel mid-way is highly recommended!

If road biking isn’t your thing, or if you fancy a change from tarmac, there are also a wide range of mountain bike tours available on Majorca. This opens all sorts of new trails to you, allowing you to really get away from the crowds and find some stunning scenery.

Majorca’s capital Palma is also well worth a visit during any trip to Majorca and it is the summer holiday choice of the Spanish royal family each year. Historical architecture abounds in the Old City part of Palma, with picturesque winding streets and buildings displaying the city’s Arab history. Visitors can make their way out onto the old city walls and gain a view of the bay, or take a tour around the nearby cathedral La Seu, built between 1229 and 1601.
