The Streets of Venice/My Throbbing Heart – Somewhere In Time Weekly Travel Photo.

Somewhere in Time is a weekly travel photo from around the world. Enjoy!

I have this weird fascination with certain places at night. Venice is one of those places.

It’s beautiful at night. The streets say goodnight to the hordes of tourists, children seem to run all over the place chasing each other and the best part? As you walk down the streets you can hear the sound of a restaurant blocks away – far before you will ever even see a glow from their windows. I will never forget the peace I felt just listening to dishes being cleaned & put away, chairs being moved about and the deep seated laughs of people sharing a meal far before I ever stumbled upon them. It was a weird and surreal feeling. It’s the kind of place where you understand that we are all really connected by a thread. Even though there’s a feeling of deep isolation in Venice, you also understand in some strange way that you are never really alone – at any moment you could be rounding the corner to meet a friend for drinks or to take your parents to dinner.

It’s almost because of this underlying beauty in Venice that the people don’t have to fake it. The word solitary makes sense here. Everyone that appears to be together also appears to be apart. I like it.

I love this shot. It’s so rare to see the streets of Venice this empty, which makes the photo seem even more magical.

Venice is beautiful day or night. My husband and I loved wandering the streets and canals to see the painted houses during the day, and the canals illuminated with light at night. Its one of my favorite places, and I can’t seem to understand why people think it’s too touristy.

I agree. It’s beautiful all the time. I can understand why people find it touristy though – I was shocked how many people were there when we were. That was why I really fell in love with it at night. Everything gets so quiet. It’s amazing.@Sheila,

Venice IS an amazing place at night and I love how you captured it in your photo! It’s so easy to fall in love while you make your way down all those narrow alleyways and you definitely feel as though you’re all alone in that impossibly romantic city. Bella!

Thanks Connie – It is weird how you feel alone in such a tiny, beautiful place? @Connie,

I’ve never been to Venice but you are really starting to get me fired up about it. Any futur Venice trips will have to include an inspired by Bethany byline.
