Across the Street from the Moulin Rouge in Paris, France.

I was standing in front of the Moulin Rouge when I took this photo in Paris. You can see from the people in the center there is always a large crowd here taking photos of the Moulin Rouge, trying to get their perfect shot. It’s tough in places like that to get a photo that is unique and still reminds you of a specific moment.

I had noticed the amazing lighting on the building across the street and the fantastic clouds rolling in. I realized the light would never hit the Moulin Rouge in the same way so I took some photos of this plain, non historic building across the street. I also knew HDR would really bring out the beauty of the clouds so I intentionally shot 3 photos at different exposures to make them come to life. I love this photo. It’s nowhere in particular but it really reminds me of Paris and standing in the crowd at this famous landmark. It also reminds me of the fantastic rainstorm we got caught in one day when we were having a picnic. I still remember the way the rain bounced off the cobblestones and the way everyone went running for cover. Everything is perfect in Paris – even the rain.

    you have certainly captured something here… this is truly HDR at its best, WONDERFULLY Done Bethany! I LOVE this and I need a print to hang in my home. I want to be perfect in Paris! ho hum… superb!

    Drool.. I’ve never been to Paris and your HDR picture looks absolutely beautiful. I especially love how some fo the suns rays are peeping out. But then again, I need to really look into this HDR thing, I know about it but never actually tried it.

      Once you try it you will be addicted. It’s really more like what you see when you are actually looking at the scene with your own eye. It is nearly impossible for the camera to pick up all the gradients of light and dark (unless you want to carry around a large format camera. I’m kind of hooked. 🙂@David @ Malaysia Asia,

    The jury’ still out on HDR for me, but in this case it’s perfect. Just goes to show that you don’t always have to be taking the shot of the most famous or recognizable site to come away with something that really captures a sense of place.

      Thanks Barbara. I think I am slowly becoming an HDR addict and it’s because of pictures like this. My entire philosophy of photography is capturing light and moments, not just places. I’m glad you like it 🙂 @Barbara Weibel,

    Wow! What a unique shot! I’m lucky enough to live in Paris and see plenty of photos, too, but this is definitely something different and special. Love seeing the city through new eyes. Thank you.

    This is a really great shot. I totally understand what you mean by tough getting a good shot. When I was in Rome. It was so hard to get a good shot of the Spanish steps or coliseum because of the crowed. Anyhow, you manged to do it and it turned out nice!

    I too am still out on my thoughts of HDR. There are some times I love it and some times I despise it.

    I LOVE the rays coming out of the clouds.

    I have to admit that I don’t know what HDR means but the shot is great regardless. I still have a lot to learn about Photography. SInce I just acquired my first DSLR, I’ll be doing some research on it.

      HDR is high dynamic range. It’s basically 3 exposures put together into one. It lets you capture the dark, light and mid tones. Have fun with your camera – what did you get? @Nick Laborde,

    It’s a fantastic photo, Beth! Every time I come by your blog, I always want more and more to learn about this HDR technique! I happen to want to buy a new camera, I need to make sure it can do this HDR. WHat’s the minimum requirement for it?

      Hi Dina,

      Glad you like it! You need a camera that can shoot at different exposures. All Dslr’s should be able to do this and most point and shoots as well. Then you just have to use the camera in manuael and switch your exposures for 3 different shots of the same subject. Email me if you need more info 🙂 @Dina,

    Hello! Wonderful capture of a city I am totally in love with. Very nice blog, it’s my first time here, and it’s a really wonderful, colorful and happening place! Great work!
    This photograph in particular grabbed my attention because some twenty years ago, when I was 16 years old and in Paris for the first time, there was a telephone booth in this particular place.
    I was looking through my cents to make a phone call home, and guess what. Two young boys, younger than me, approached me, put a knife to my face and threatened to use it if I didn’t give them my money.
    Today I would have given them everything I have, but back then (protected by youthful indestructability) I just laughed at them. They didn’t get as much as a franc. It is a memory from my early days as a traveller that I sometimes think about.
    Today I travel professionally, and I have never encountered anything remotely scary.

    Either way, thanks for sharing your wonderful picture of a place that means a lot to me!

      Hi Vibeke – Wow! That is a crazy story! The area was a bit of a seedier area from what I remember but I can’t believe that happened to you. I’m so glad you were ok and nothing horrible happened! That is something that would definitely stay with a person though and I can’t believe the photo is of that exact spot! Strange.@Vibeke,

    I lived a 5 minute walk from there a long time ago and fell in love with Paris. That picture captures the spirit so well! Even though… in a weird way it reminds me more of other areas in Paris than Pigalle 🙂
