Yay! Our #Vines Made It Onto The San Francisco Chronicle.

By Posted in - Published & Travel Blog on July 26th, 2013 Travel Vines: Bethany Salvon and Randy Kalp of Beers and Beans.

I’ve been a fan of the Chronicle since my undergraduate days at San Francisco State University in the early 2000s. At that time, the paper was a staple in my life. Whether I was on the MUNI, eating in a Mission taqueria, or hunkered down at a bar on Ocean Avenue, it always seemed to be there.

I saw the demise of the Chronicle’s old-school composing room when X-Acto knives, wax machines and light boards were ushered out like the death of an unpopular poet. I’ve walked through the mechanical bowels of its shuttered printing presses. A noisy world where deaf printers once worked in harmony with their hearing counterparts, many of whom learned sign language to communicate because talking really wasn’t needed. And I sat happily on Sunday afternoons in my in-law apartment, drinking Anchor Steam with the paper in hand as that old San Francisco fog rolled in from the Pacific.

So, yeah, I guess you could say getting a shout-out from the Chronicle is a pretty big thing for me.

Over the last couple of months, we’ve actually had two of our Vines picked up by the paper’s travel editor, Spud Hilton, for a weekly piece he does on his blog, Bad Latitude, which showcases the week’s best Vines. Our first was from Siena, Italy, during a Local Living Tour with GAdventures. And then last week one of our Vines from Gili Lankanfushi Resort in the Maldives was also included in his weekly roundup. Hilton believes that “travel Vines are the next evolution of postcards” and Beth and I couldn’t agree more.

You can take a photo of Red Square in Moscow and it freezes a moment that you can experience with one sense. Take 6 seconds of video in Red Square and you capture the sounds of life — laughing, talking, marching — and the movement of life.

Spud Hilton from Travel Vines the latest evolution of postcards?

If you are on Vine and want to show off of your own video postcards, just tag them with #sixsecondpostcard. Each week, Hilton picks the best ones for his blog. To read and see more of what the Chronicle’s travel editor is up to, you can follow Hilton on Twitter and Vine at @SpudHilton.

Now, we want to hear from you. Do you think Vines are the next evolution of the Postcard?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. And if you are on Vine, leave your handle in the comments so we can follow you there. As always, you can find us on Twitter and Vine at @BeersandBeans.

What? You went to SFSU? Me too! Also there in the early-mid 2000s. Should we start the super-exclusive SFSU alum travel bloggers society? We may be the only members…haha.
