We are fortunate enough to have a pretty fantastic travel support crew when we travel. Beth’s sister and brother-in-law have been our saviors when it comes to watching our little dog Chachy and getting us to the airport for ridiculously early flights. However, occasionally, we still have to leave our car in long-term airport parking. And when we do, we always try to follow these three simple rules–remove, remove and remove–to make our car look less appetizing to would be thieves.

Remove previous parking stubs and receipts

Let’s face it, long-term airport parking can be costly. So why add to that cost by losing your ticket. Not only will misplacing your stub add to your total travel expenses, but it is also very inconvenient, costing you extra time and stress, which is something nobody wants to deal with after a vacation or business trip. It is also extremely important to take notice of whether or not the parking lot suggests taking your ticket with you or leaving it behind on your dashboard. Keeping your car free of used parking passes/stubs will help ensure your final moments of your trip end on a positive note.

Remove valuables from your car

Just because long-term airport parking lots have security, does not mean that you should leave your valuables sprawled out in the car. Heck, even you don’t think your Justin Bieber CD has much value, a thief may think otherwise. Or, he/she may think that the CD is just the tip of the iceberg. As a safety precaution, Beth and I even place our iPhone car charger in the glove compartment. We don’t want to give a thief any reason to break our window, which is costly to replace. As a crime reporter, I saw this stuff happen all the time at our local transit centers, so you better believe that these smash and grab burglaries also happen at major airports, like LAX and Heathrow.

Remove the trash from your vehicle

Say you just dropped your car off at Heathrow Parking for a week, but left your mail as well as some fresh fast food wrappers on your front seat. Guess what? When you return your car is going to reek. But if that’s your only issue, consider yourself lucky. Nowadays, some thieves are just as interested in your identity as they are your electronics or jewelry. So, by leaving your mail or other personal documents, like pay stubs, bills or parking tickets, you run the risk of having your car broken into by someone looking to violate your personal privacy.
