Somewhere In Time is a weekly travel photo from around the world. Enjoy!

Chichicastenango (affectionately known as Chi Chi) is a large indigenous mountain top town in Guatemala. On Sundays & Thursdays they have one of the largest and most colorful markets in Guatemala. One of the things I remember most are the large amount of beautiful textiles they sell at this market.

Although I had been to Chi Chi before, it was also one of the stops on our volunteer tour with Cooperative For Education. Randy and I were both really excited to return and see the market because when we were here a few years ago, we got on the wrong bus and ended up taking a six hour detour completely missing the market.

Before this stop with CoEd my memories of Chi Chi were very different – previously we had stayed in a $16 hotel room complete with blooming Geraniums and a cable TV. It was a very chilly night and everything was closed. We also had an incurable hankering for chocolate cake. We walked around the town for a while trying to find a bakery but we never did. We spent the night in the hotel room, where I watched the movie Hitch because it was the only station in English. Randy fell asleep.

It’s really funny the random things that you remember when you travel, and I have very fond memories of our time in Chi Chi, even though it was really laid back.

This time our experience was very different. We arrived in time to walk throughout the entire market and it was incredible. It was no longer a sleepy town sans chocolate cake. Instead, it was a lively, hopping market without an empty space to be found.

As our little group of volunteers walked throughout the market, haggling prices and shopping for souvenirs, I took the opportunity to take some street photos and that’s where this image comes from.

I was trying to be sly with my picture taking but this girl spotted me as she was walking around selling her wares. I love the expression on her face and the way her textiles are strewn over her shoulders. I also really love the two people sitting on the stairs behind her, taking a rest in the shade.

This is one of my favorite photos from Guatemala which is why I decided to feature it as a Somewhere In Time image.

Later this week I’ll be publishing a new photo essay from this Chi Chi market so stay tuned as we share more images of our time in Guatemala with Cooperative For Education.
