Danube River Cruise with @Gate1Travel: Tips and Tricks

Cruising up the Danube is a great way to see another side of Austria and Germany. Not only do you get to visit a handful of great cities along the way, a Danube River cruise also gives you a chance to experience the famous historic river the way it was meant to explored, by boat.

During our recent excursion up the river with Gate 1 Travel, I gathered a few tips and tricks that I think are perfect for every passenger going on The Sound of Music, not matter if this is your first time or you are a veteran cruiser.

Pack a snack

Pick up some fruit from the coffee and tea station before going out for the day.

One for the road

Order a beer or glass of wine at the end of dinner (each is complimentary) to take into the lounge or back to your room.

You’ve got choices

Check out the menu at each meal to find additional dishes that can be ordered from it directly at no additional charge.

Get Connected

You can get a data sim card for your iPhone or iPad with 1gb of data from the Orange (think: Sprint) stores in Vienna. It’s really simple and a great way to stay connected during the first four days of your trip, which are spent in Austria. Just keep in mind that the sim card won’t work once you enter into Germany.

Choose your side wisely

If you are on the Danube River cruise from Vienna to Regensburg, then keep in mind that the rooms on the right side of the ship will not face the dock and the rooms on the left side will. Why does this matter? Well, if you face the dock and don’t have a third floor room, then your view will be pretty limited each time the boat is in port. Where as passengers on the right side of the ship, no matter what floor level they may be on, will have unobstructed views of the river and shore. However, on the Danube river, ships dock up against one another, so if that happens then your unobstructed view will be gone. On our trip, this situation happened to us twice.
