“The Web is dead,” or so Wired magazine declared in 2010. And do you know what killed it? (Hint: it wasn’t the radio star.)

Apps! Yes, those little icons that make our retina display screens  glow, because, as Apple’s famous saying goes, “There’s an app for that.”

Now, maybe that title was a bit too chicken little (remember, he thought the sky was falling), because obviously the World Wide Web is still going strong; however, the points the story made about why apps are redefining how we use and will use the Internet in the future were spot on, with the biggest reason being that apps are faster and uncluttered, making the information super highway look more like a New Jersey Turnpike at rush hour.

Enter Discover Brunei, a free app for the Apple iPad by MeSixty. In one fell swoop, Discover Brunei–the official Brunei Tourism App–revolutionized what a travel app could be, creating an innovative masterpiece that blends education, interaction, information and outstanding visuals and photography into a package that will get you and your family excited about visiting Brunei, even if you had never imagined traveling to the sovereign state on the island of Borneo in South East Asia.

Designed to work online and off, Discover Brunei is the perfect way to get acquainted with Brunei, no matter if you are on a flight, hanging out at a coffee shop or just sitting at home looking to travel to another world from your coach. There’s a lot to love about Discover Brunei, including a robust table of contents that features 10 sections choke-full of information about every aspect of Brueni, featuring details about the kingdom’s heritage, useful tips, food, lodging and eco-tourism–to name a few–that are laid out with such visual precision that is simply a joy to use.

If you couldn’t tell by now, I love this app and a big reason for that is MeSixty’s skills at utilizing the unique facets of the iPad to launch a new era in interactive travel media that engages the user through touch, like playing the Gulingtangan–a musical instrument comprised of gongs and drums–or tapping on a phrase to hear how to say it in Malay–Brunei’s official language–and social and interactive elements, like Instagram, Four Square and Google Maps.

Now, if you still need even more incentive to check out the free Discover Brunei app, then you may be interested in a very easy contest the Brunei Tourism Board is hosting directly through the app in which you can win a trip for two to Brunei worth more than $10,000.

You can download the app here: Discover Brunei.

After you check out the app, I’d love to hear your thoughts about it in the comments below?

Those are some beautiful screenies – just the way a brochure should be. How neat!

The Web will not die because of the many innovations it provides people. In fact, it will grow stronger as people expect more from it. Also, I do agree that this app is very engaging, interactive and informative at the same time.
