You can hike to the top of as many of Hawaii’s many peaks as you’d like; you can traverse through jungles of the lushest green for days on end; but until you catch a glimpse of the majesty that lies under the Pacific, you’re only taking in half of the beauty that the Islands have to offer. With year-round warm water and sites offering varying degrees of difficulty, Hawaii is the ideal place to get some scuba diving under your belt. With a myriad of companies offering quick and easy certification classes, you can wake up in the Aqua Waikiki Pearl and be out and about beneath the waves in no time at all! To make the most of your trip, here are several of Hawaii’s un-missable scuba spots to check out; we’re confident that once you start, you just won’t want to stop!

Oahu

Hanauma Bay
No sense in ignoring the best and most popular; just down the road from the capital and all of the different Honolulu hotels is the Hanauma Bay Wildlife Preserve–a longtime favorite of the scuba community. This area is teeming with wildlife amidst the colorful backdrop of the coral reef, and presents the perfect classroom for those who may be a bit uncomfortable yet at the prospect of a boat dive. Look around for turtles, eels, and octopi as you meander beneath the tumbling waves.

Seaplane Wreck
Created as an artificial reef project, this sunken twin engine plane lies just off of Poka’i Bay and is a favorite of local scuba enthusiasts. While perhaps not ideal for beginners due to its depth, those who feel comfortable enough beneath the surf after several excursions would find this to be a fun challenge. There is no shortage of creatures to meet, and with the plane presenting an interesting backdrop, make sure to not leave solid ground without your camera!

Maui

Marriott Reef
If you’re hoping to island hop a bit, jumping on a quick flight to Maui will open up another wealth of possibilities of the scuba persuasion! For any Finding Nemo fans hoping to see some of our green shelled friends in their natural environment, there is no better place to go than the Marriott Reef. There is a slightly strong current at times at this particular site, so as always, exercise caution when strapping on your mask.

Kauai

Tunnels Reef
While perhaps out of the realm of possibility during winter months due to the dangerous surf on Kauai’s North Shore, Tunnels Reef is a terrific spot for divers of all experience levels. Tunnels champions some of the most famous lava formations, which give it its dynamic look and feel. Advanced swimmers can look forward to exploring a host of caves and, not surprisingly, tunnels, while those who would like to keep it simple can expect to run into a variety of different animals!
