Image: Panajachel Village on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

This photo was taken as we were leaving Panajachel on route to Santiago via a ferry over Lake Atitlan. I’ll have to post some photos of the lake because it is seriously stunning – one of the most beautiful I have seen. Little villages dot the circumference of the lake and it’s flanked in the back by a volcano. Travel eye candy and also extremely serene and peaceful. We were on a trip with Cooperative for Education when I took this photo and we spent the week hobnobbing around Guatemala visiting schools and local families.

Panajechel is an awesome little spot for a visit. It’s the most touristy of the towns but it has it all and is picture perfect. It’s a great place to base yourself for a trip to the lake area and then you can spend a few days visiting the other villages as well via ferry or local boat. You could probably easily spend a week exploring this area. You can hike the route between the villages as well but I wouldn’t, someone I know was hiking there and was held up by a man with a machete. This entire area of Guatemala feels incredibly safe and it was probably just a wrong time/wrong place thing but going via boat is absolutely stunning anyway and the picture perfect lake provides amazing backdrops for your photos.

Lake Atitlan ferry rides are awesome, but you learn quickly not to sit in the front, or you get splashed repeatedly! 😛
