Road tripping through America is not what it used to be, in terms of cost that is. Those once cheap greasy spoons and Mom & Pop motels have either been replaced by Denny’s and Motel 6 or they’ve had to raise their prices to compete, destroying yet one more budget option from the American landscape.
But this is America dammit, and if there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s our relentlessness to turn our dreams into a reality. So if your heart’s been aching for a trip down Highway 61 or a cross-country road trip, then you shouldn’t let the current financial landscape hold you back nor should you have to sacrifice quality, you just have to find cheaper, alternative ways, like eating from grocery stores where you can buy quality products like cheeses, meats and organics for far less than an early bird special.
If this is your first time to the United States or if you’ve lived here, but never bought from the deli, then I highly recommend buying your meats and cheeses directly from the deli counter, and while you’re there check out the choice meats and cheeses that Boar’s Head is producing these days. They’ve scoured the world for their new flavors, which include Jerk Turkey, Chipotle Chicken, 3 Pepper Colby Jack Cheese and Chipotle Gouda, and if you don’t believe me, just check out this video from two of its taste finders to see what bold flavors they are bringing to a supermarket near you.
Obviously, I’m not a vegetarian; however, Beth is, and she’s actually had a huge impact on me over the last few years. So, as a bonus tip, I thought I would also include one of our favorite vegetarian sandwich combinations when road tripping through the States, which is mozzarella, tomato, basil with a dribble of balsamic on ciabbata bread.
Do you have a favorite road trip sandwich?
