I’m not sure why, but as I undressed by my locker at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort’s Emerald Mist Spa, I was a bit nervous.

“Am I supposed to take off my boxers?’ I thought to myself, trying to remember what the attendant had said as he led me back to the locker room. “And, what is this container of fresh smelling salts he left beside my robe for? Should I shower before I get the massage?’

Yes, these were my thoughts as I put on my robe (boxers still on) for my second-ever massage and walked out to the spa’s plush rejuvenation area where water, fruits and fresh juices are available. Go ahead, you can laugh at me. It’s fine, really, I don’t mind. Seriously, who gets anxiety before getting a massage at a luxury resort?

After waiting a few minutes, I met my massage therapist, Paulette Osborne, and she walked me back to the room. With more than 20 years of experience, I knew I was in good hands (pun fully intended), but dammit I still felt nervous as I shuffled alongside of Paulette, clasping together my snow white robe and trying to play it cool.

The room was dimly lit and stylishly tranquil. As I walked to the table, Paulette explained a little more about the Bamboo Massage I’d be receiving. She then instructed me to get under the soft, warm linens and said she would be back in a minute. Since I was still unsure about the boxers situation, I decided to ask her myself.

“Whichever way you feel most comfortable,” she said smiling. “You’ll be covered the whole time.”

I left my boxers on and got comfortable.

For the next 50 minutes, Paulette treated me to one of the most relaxing hours of my life. From the moment she applied the special massage oil and warm bamboo stalks, any irrational anxieties I had about getting the massage left my mind along with all the stress that had been locked up in my tense muscles.

Not only was Paulette’s touch soothing, but her one, two combo of rolling and kneading with the stalks was deeply relaxing and strangely (in a good way) invigorating. In fact, as I lay there, towel over my eyes, with the massage coming to an end, I had a kind of buzz, like the one Red Bull is supposed to give you: rejuvenation, a clear mind and, most importantly, wings. It was at that moment I realized that for me to reach my full potential in life, I need no less than 30 minutes a day with Paulette. Yes, she was that good!

Know Before You Go

As I was putting together this story, I went back to the Emerald Mist Spa’s website to check some facts and I came across this fantastic “How To Spa” guide from the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. I’ve included what I consider the three most important items below; however, if you are new to spas, I highly recommend checking out the resort’s full How to Spa guide.

Do I Have To Disrobe Entirely For My Spa Treatment?

Upon arrival, a robe and slippers will be provided for you. Undergarments are not necessary, but you may wear them during your treatment if you prefer. Our Certified therapists will ensure that you are properly covered throughout your treatment.

How Can I Ensure Myself The Best Spa Experience Possible?

To ensure that you obtain the best possible experience we strongly advise that you arrive 20 minutes prior to your service in order to enjoy the spa amenities such as sauna, steam and whirlpools. Arriving late will limit the time of your treatment. Your treatment will end on time so the next guest is not delayed. The full value of the treatment will be charged.

For Your Comfort

To ensure your comfort during your treatment, we encourage you to communicate with your service provider regarding room temperature, pressure and technique. Shaving is not recommended prior to any body exfoliation or hair removal service. However, we recommend that men shave approximately two hours prior to their scheduled facial.

Do you have a favorite massage? If so, we’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
