Editors note: So it just hit Beth and I (basically after receiving this guest post from our friends at HostelBookers) that Halloween is less than two weeks away. And just like the Greek Islands, we are closer than we have ever been to Transylvania. When we realized this, I saw Beth’s eyes light up, but as the voice of reason I had to squash any ideas she may have had about taking some crazy multi-day train or bus to Romania next week to catch the festivities. Though, if you’re in Europe this Halloween, I think staying at any of these hostels below would definitely make for a ghoulishly good evening (sorry I couldn’t resist).

Halloween is fast approaching, so why not bed down in 5 haunted or weird hotels or hostels across the world to suit all spooky tastes. Castles, monasteries, brothels and old prisons will certainly provide you with an unforgettable stay.

In Ireland, there have been many ghost and ghoul sightings around the rural setting of Captain Halpin’s Bunkhouse. The hostel, located in Wicklow, organises special evenings out to go and hunt them down. This year, especially for Halloween, there’s a Murder Mystery night on the Saturday. On Monday 31 October there’s a traditional Halloween party with apple bobbing and scary story time by the open fire. Wicklow’s main square is set to turn into a Halloween Haven and the local gaol is even putting on a Halloween Horror Week. Dorm rooms start from €12.08pppn.

After 100 years of retaining the naughty and nasty the Jailhotel Löwengraben is now a cool and unusual hotel located in Lucerne, Switzerland. Guests can stay in “unplugged cells” for the real behind-the-bars experience or for more luxury opt for the director’s office or former library. Private rooms from £27.27.

Loch Lomond Hostel in Scotland is an impressive country house set in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. It has stunning views of Loch Lomond and the hills to the east. Guests can feel the ghostly presence as they walk around the grounds and the hostel is said to have its own ghost in permanent residence. The original features of the beautiful building – a sweeping staircase, stained glass window and ballroom – make it the perfect setting for a ghostly experience. Dorm rooms start from €18.75pppn.

While it may appear tranquil and serene on the surface, 7 Santi ancient monastery is located in the very heart of Florence, home to the infamous poisonings and treacheries of the Borgia family. It certainly gives the Halloween holiday a rather macabre edge. Some say they’ve heard the whispers of souls trapped in the 7 Santi convent walls at night. Dorm rooms start from €12.08pppn.

In Transylvania, guests can’t get much spookier than staying in Nathan’s Villa Hostel. It’s right in the heart of Count Dracula’s home town and next to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Sighisoara Citadel. The actual Nathan’s Villa Hostel building is 100 years old – plenty of time to soak up the ghosts and ghouls in the spooky surroundings. The hostel offers lots of trips into the surrounding area, including the 800-year-old oak forest and hiking into the hills. Dorm rooms start at €8.60pppn.

HostelBookers has plenty more to offer to all those who are after some unusual hotels.

@Lorna – the roamantics, Ha! I would love to, but we’ve got a date with Brooke of Brooke vs. the World in Istanbul and we can’t be late.

I used to love horror movies too, but I can honestly say they’ve put the fear into me, especially when it comes hanging around lakes at night; though, I don’t think I could resist any of these spots either. -Randy

I’ve always wanted to stay in the hotel-type apartments from the movie “Let the Right One In.” That little girl creeps me out and something about all beige surroundings is scary enough.
