There are few cities around the world that are on as many “to visit” lists as New York. A vibrant, exciting city with a strong reputation for culture and class, it’s no surprise that so many travelers flock to the Big Apple every year. Thanks to a well-established trend in romantic comedies, TV shows and novels alike, one of the most perpetuated images of the city is in the winter: Christmas shopping in the department stores, ice skating at the Rockefeller center, horse-drawn carriage rides through the snow in Central Park…However, for a city as diverse and exciting as New York, it would be a crime to limit your experience of it to one season alone! Summer in the city provides just as many picture perfect moments, if not more.
The music festival scene explodes in New York in the summer, so if you’re a music fan this is certainly the time to go. The Northside Festival in North Brooklyn kicks off in June, which this year sees Beirut and Mount Eerie appearing amongst many others, all for the low admission price of $70, or as little as $8 for an individual show. For a bit of indie fun, head to the 4Knots festival at South Street Seaport: completely free to attend, the one day festival is guaranteed to be buzzing. Another free festival with a skater twist is the Afro-Punk Festival in Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park. Take in some music, enter a skate or BMX competition, or simply admire the Skate Artwall: a large mural composed of over 300 painted skateboards.
For the culture vultures among us, New York has loads to offer. Art galleries abound, with famous options including MoMA and the Met, but equally there’s much to be found if you simply wander the streets with an eye peeled for independent galleries. For some history and culture, you can lose yourself in some of New York’s finest museums, including the National Museum of the American Indian.
If you’re after a unique summer experience that you’ll only find in New York, look no further than the Great Urban Race. Adorned in fancy dress and divided up into teams of two, participants race around a huge obstacle course in the city, solving puzzles and completing tasks all with the aim of reaching the finish line first (and having fun along the way). Another unique experience can be found at Rainbow City: a giant playground filled with 40 huge inflatable sculptures. Each colorful balloon is an interactive experience at this art installation, where you are encouraged to touch, bounce and squeeze to your heart’s content. Aside from anything else, this offers a great opportunity to pander to your inner child!

I love summer in New York. Everything came alive more festival and more things to do. I love sitting by the pier and watch the sun goes down and browsing through different art gallery in Chelesa area. So much things to see and do.
