Harry’s Bar – Venice, Italy – Somewhere In Time Weekly Travel Photo

Somewhere In Time is a weekly travel photo from around the world. Enjoy!

Harry’s Bar is probably the most famous bar in Venice. Frequented by many well known actors & artists, the bar is most known for being a constant favorite of Ernest Hemingway. If that weren’t enough, it is also the home of the world famous Bellini drink.

Even though we knew it was overpriced we decided to saunter over there one evening and partake in the Venice ritual of drinking a Bellini in Harry’s Bar. What a mistake.

This photo was taken about 42 seconds after we got kicked out.

As soon as we entered the door, we got turned out. Randy had shorts on and that was the deal killer for Harry’s. They weren’t very nice about it and I quickly glanced at the menu and saw that a single cup of coffee was pushing 10 Euro. Ouch! I can only imagine what the Bellini must have cost.

As soon as we left we remembered that Randy was wearing his technical pants and we actually had the bottoms of his pants in our backpack. We were so bummed we didn’t think of it in the bar because it would’ve been pretty awesome to pull them out and zip them on right then and there in the middle of this stuffy bar. I’m sure it would’ve mortified everyone in there.

I can’t give a full review of Harry’s Bar because I didn’t even get to sit down but I can tell you it didn’t impress me much. Of course it might be because they kicked us out, but it seemed liked a pretty egotistical and expensive place. I’m sure back in the day before it turned snooty and overpriced it was pretty cool hang out spot but now I really can’t imagine anyone like Ernest Hemingway making this their favorite bar anymore. It did not seem like the type of spot that would lure in creative types, especially with the prices.

I would love to know if anyone has been. If you have please let me know about your experiences in the comments below. 🙂

    Great photo! Yes, the bar’s an iconic spot, and yes, I’ve sipped a Bellini there because somewhere you hear that’s just what you are supposed to do in Venice. And yes, it was terribly over-priced, the atmosphere — well, there wasn’t any — and I think that same rude guy was likely our waiter. Consider it a great travel moment that you forgot the bottom of the tech pants…it saved you a lot of money and you got the great shot!

      Thanks for commenting! So glad we made the right choice even if it was by accident. 🙂 @Powell Berger,

    There is nothing worse than getting kicked out of a place for a wardrobe violation while on vacation… I’ve had it happen more than once.

      Hahaha! It’s true! And when you’re traveling you really have limited clothing options. @Morgan,

    Ha ha, at least you’ll always have the claim to fame of being kicked out of a famous bar. Ernest Hemingway would probably be proud of you these days if he could see what has happened to his favourite hangout.

      Hahaha True! I think you’re right too. Ernest Hemingway would be deeply disappointed I’m sure! @Turkey’s For Life,

    Sorry that you got kicked out! Wow they have a dress code for the bar I would only assume that the inside must be really nice especially with prices like that. Really love the photo though!

      Well from the sounds of it – looks like it was a blessing in disguise! haha…. From what I saw of the inside it was kind of boring looking. Nothing special. In fact I remembered thinking that it was a waste of real estate because they didn’t have that many windows but they were right on the canal. Glad you like the photo though!
      @Bluegreen Kirk,

    I love the timelessness of this photo. It looks great in black and white. That’s funny that you guys got kicked out. They probably did you a favor by saving you a bunch of money. I had never heard of this bar before.
