Hot Air Balloon. Hot Air Balloooooooooon…

Just saying the words conjures up notions of faraway exotic illusions.  What is it about this magical mystery flying machine that turns me into mush?

Hot + Air + Balloon = Imaginative Thoughts of Wanderlust.

There is nothing else in the world that can bring the same amount of whimsy & travel fascination as a hot air balloon. Sure, planes are cool but they come with TSA & screaming kids; trains are decidedly romantic but no, even they still don’t entrance the way a hot air balloon can. Could a submarine steal the show? For some maybe but no, still not the same. Plus they come with that whole water pressure issue.

I just can’t think of anything else in the world that lights my fancy like the image of a hot air balloon floating effortlessly around the world. It makes my thoughts dance.

It’s my little travel pie in the sky, if you will.

I always dreamed of taking a hot air balloon ride but I never had the chance to make it a reality. Until we went to Turkey.

When we headed to Cappadocia on the 12 hour overnight bus I had a pretty strong gut feeling that we were in for something special. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect – maybe some hiking, some late night photo walks and plates of delicious Turkish yogurt.

I can’t explain it fully – but you know when you get a feeling about a place? You can’t describe it, you can’t put your finger on it but somewhere deep inside there is something brewing – a rumbling, a magnetic force, a calling. Sometimes that one indescribable feeling is all you need to get you going or keep you going.

I had this feeling about Cappadocia. It captured me, enraptured me, kept me dreaming & wanting to walk down the next, dusty alleyway.

Then one morning I saw the hot air balloons floating over the Tim Burton-esque landscape and I knew of all places – this should be it. This should be the place I do mental cartwheels among the clouds and effortlessly skip hand-in-hand with the delicate wind.

It was on a wing and a prayer that I sent an email to Royal Balloon asking if they might like a review of their balloon ride in exchange for a couple seats on their flying fantasy machine known as the hot air balloon. I pushed send, crossed my fingers and then tried not to check my email every 5 minutes.

A few hours later we were booked in for a 5am flight the next day!

I will never forget the feeling – sitting in our little cave hotel room, listening to the call to prayer and realizing that I was going up in a hot air balloon the next day – in Cappadocia, Turkey, no less! It was surreal.

Talk about a dream come true – it was unbelievable. Better than I ever could have imagined. The hot air balloon was the perfect vessel for true escape – letting go of everything yet still being awed at the same time.

In the space of a couple hours I saw Cappadocia in a completely different light and grew more enchanted with it as each minute that passed. I now can’t imagine what it would’ve been like if we didn’t go.

Although the last few weeks have been some of the hardest for my family I’ve been daydreaming back to that day when we floated along the Turkish skies like spellbound children reading their favorite fairytale.

Even on land the memory is still a great escape. The people at Royal Balloon were equally fantastic, especially our pilot Suat, who was beyond compare – knowledgeable, confident & funny.

Behind the scenes I’ve been editing a lot of photos from our hot air balloon ride for 2 upcoming photo essays. This one is a favorite of mine which is why I decided to feature it in the Somewhere In Time series. Where should I start?

This view of Boston is pretty nice – especially for a view from a hospital room. I think my dad got lucky when he transferred to this Cadillac of rooms at Mass General Hospital a couple days ago.

Life has been tough lately. I realize most people who read this blog don’t know what’s going on in our personal lives all the time. The last year, while filled with plenty of travel, has been one of the toughest in my life. In fact, the only year that comes close to this type difficulty was when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a few years ago. That year was pretty devastating but this year has actually been harder because I’ve been living under the fear that I could lose one of the most important people in my life – my dad.

Last summer my dad spent 10 weeks in the hospital for a variety of ailments – mostly stemming from an infection he had – a really nasty infection that almost took his life. We spent almost all of our waking time at the hospital by his side. After several surgeries and two and a half months of hospitalization, he thankfully recovered and then he spent another 6 weeks in rehab. During all this his kidneys took a hit, we were told he had end stage renal failure and he ended up on dialysis.

My dad is a lot tougher than he looks though and despite the doctors telling him that he would never get off dialysis, with a combination of strict dieting and acupuncture, he did. Things were starting to look up and I remember him crying as he told me that he was off dialysis. We were all relieved. It felt like maybe after months of fearing that we would lose him, life could go back to normal again and he would get better.

After that, Randy & I left for Europe. Things were good at home for the most part but I during the trip was haunted with anxiety and horrible dreams about his health. Mentally I had not recovered from the fear of losing him. When we came back in December everything was great – dad was doing really well and looked better than any of us had seen in a long time.

Then January rolled around and everything changed again. He has been hospitalized three times since January and this last hospitalization has really taken its toll.

Two weeks ago we took a drive to Cape Cod and he ended up confused, freezing and weak. In the convenience store, he stumbled around grasping my arm and the snack aisle for balance as we lumbered towards the bathroom. His eyes were blank and it was scary. We drove home as quickly as we could and as he walked inside he collapsed but we all held him up and got him to the bed. He said he wanted to take a nap. Afterwards he was fine and back to normal – at dinner we were all joking around but he couldn’t remember anything that had happened earlier. It was bizarre but we concluded it must’ve been low blood sugar. A day later he was admitted to Mass General Hospital for an infection that had apparently been raging for quite some time, in his right foot. The infection unfortunately had spread into the bone and in an attempt to prevent it from spreading into his blood they had to amputate his foot.

By the time you read this article they will have taken his leg (up to the knee) as well.

It’s been a devastating two weeks due mainly to the shock of this drastic step that no one anticipated.

Overall my dad is doing much better now. We spend just about every day with him trying to keep his spirits happy because he is having a very hard time with it all. We just need to get through this surgery so we can start rehab. Complicating things is the fact that the last two times he has been put under he has fallen into a coma. One of those times he was in a coma for 3 weeks and the doctors didn’t think he would make it. Anesthesia and him just don’t mix. As a family we have been paranoid of him ever going under again and all the surgeries he has had in the past year have been done with a local block – he was never put under.

It would be an understatement to say that I’m not absolutely paranoid about the next 24 hours. I’m terrified – thinking that I might not see him again. I feel sick to my stomach over it and I can’t sleep. The one positive thing is that Mass General is an awesome hospital and they actually invented anesthesia. We’ve shown them the paperwork and told them of his allergies and issues. If any hospital can see him through this I’m sure it’s this one. We have no other choice but to go through with this next surgery so there isn’t anything else we can do but hope & pray at this point that everything will be okay. It’s so scary knowing that tomorrow he is going under and there isn’t anything I can do about it but kiss him and tell him that I love him. I hate this and I can’t even imagine what he is going through mentally.

Dealing with the amputation is another set of emotional & financial issues that we need to face after the surgery. My parents are self employed. We’ve been told it could be anywhere for 4 – 12 months for him to recuperate and work again. Because of all the medical issues from last year we are forced at this point to put our family home on the market and try to sell it before they lose it. All of this has been such a stress  – the hospitalizations, the amputation, the anesthesia and now the house.

Everything has changed in the blink of an eye.

We’re a very close family and I know we’ll get through this. So many people (apparently over 2 million in the US) are amputees and they have great lives. We can only hope for the best tomorrow and then deal with the life changes after that. It’s going to be a long road but I know we’re going to make it through to the other side. It’s been a really hard year and I’m hoping this is rock bottom – right now it sure feels like it is. I pray that things will start to get better after this.

As drastic as this is, I’m hoping that this surgery will rid him finally of whatever infection has been plaguing him for the past year and that he can finally get back to living life.

Hopefully tomorrow at this time he’ll be awake & recovering. Then we can all breathe a huge sigh of relief. Right now, the fear of the anesthesia is worse than the fear of losing the leg – at least for me. I hope next week at this time he’ll be healing in rehab and getting ready for the next phase of his life. We need to be at the hospital for 5am tomorrow – I’m anxious, I’m tired and I can’t sleep. But I’m thankful that at the very least, my dad gets this great view of Boston to help with his recovery.

As part of our partnership with Hostelbookers last year we were able to stay at one of the coolest hostels I have ever been in – Wombats in Vienna, Austria – which is where I took this photo.

I was walking around taking photos for our review when I spotted this lovely girl in the hat. Her cheekbones were beautiful and she was just so carelessly cool – just like the person I dream of being when I travel. Instead I am always the person who ends up wearing the same grungy outfit for a week straight and has no cool hats.

The minute I saw her, this is how I imagined the scene. It didn’t look like this at all in the hostel lobby – there were people checking in, checking email & chitchatting the night away but when I saw her in this hat with that gorgeous bone structure I saw Noir and nothing else. If only someone had been smoking a cigarette!

Immediately after I noticed the man across from her, enamored by her I’m sure, the girls standing behind her like anonymous shadows. (In a past life I’m quite sure they were probably her minions.) Then lastly, there was the guy checking his email on the left. The scene was so 1940′s Noir yet modern at the same time – I couldn’t resist it. She inspired this entire photo and captivated me instantly.

The lighting wasn’t as dramatic as this in the hostel so I created the look I saw in my head during the editing process. I love this photo because it will always remind me of this moment. The moment I stood in the middle of a Viennese hostel and in an instant watched 80 years of time disappear into the easy going style of a beautiful girl.

I have also decided that I really need to add a hat to my traveling wardrobe…

Somewhere In Time Is Back!

This used to be a weekly ongoing series but with all the craziness that occurred over the summer I ran out of my stash of ready photos, then with all the traveling that occurred in the fall I was unable to catch up, never mind get ahead. I put quite a bit of time into selecting my photos for this series so it’s taken me quite a while to get some edited and ready to roll but here we are the first of SIT photo of the year. Yah! If you’re new to this blog be sure to check out the line up of last year’s Somewhere In Time photos.

This photo that is part of an upcoming photo essay on the Red Light District in Amsterdam which hopefully we’ll be out in a couple of weeks. It was extremely tough getting the shots for this essay since it is highly frowned upon to take photos in the Red Light District and it was very dark but I prevailed!

This one is my favorite of the bunch. In fact, I LOVE this photo. It just might be my new favorite which is why I decided it should have top billing and be the first to announce the comeback of the Somewhere In Time series.

I feel slightly crass in saying this but the best part of Amsterdam was this illicit section of town. It was beautiful in all the sad, cunning and melancholic ways that happen when you have women selling themselves for money in window fronts. The girls were all beautiful and seemed somewhere on the cusp of something – maybe hope? One foot still lies in the possibility of a normal life while the other is dragged by cheap sex, debts owed & g-strings. I look at this girl and can’t help but think about her life when she isn’t bathed in the red light. Is she happy? Is she sad? Is her cup half empty or half full? Does she knit? What is life like being on the other side of that glass?

Her expression is terribly forlorn, her eyes are hollow and empty. She’s a lover and a fighter and she’s completely anonymous. She could be anyone – in another life any of us could be her.

There is something about the way she is standing with one hand on the doorknob and the other gracing the window that speaks to me. Torn between two worlds. Her right hand lets the customer in and her left hand, resting in a seemingly simple gesture, carries hope. It looks like she hasn’t completely given in yet. Somewhere in her there is a hidden & humble longing that is innate to all girls living on the edge. It belongs to her, she owns it and it might be all she has left.

Somewhere in there she is still alive, her mind thinking, her heart racing & pulsing the brilliant red blood throughout her body – just like the red light that engulfs her.

This week’s photo is a personal one. When we went to Rome the first thing (and only thing) we did was meet up with Brigida and Gina. Gina (she is sitting in this photo) was married to my father’s cousin Emilio and Brigida is their daughter. When I was 12 years old Brigida came to the U.S. to meet everyone but that was the only time I had met her previously.

We only had very loose directions to meet her at a train station and I didn’t even know what she would look like or what she would be wearing. As luck would have it, we walked off the train and right into big hugs. We both saw each other and just kind of knew that we were looking for each other instantaneously. We went back to their condo where Gina cooked an amazing Italian meal for us and then later in the day Brigida took us for a tour of the Vatican because they only live about a 10 minute walk from it. While we were there it poured and the entire square vacated except for a couple girls and their mother who were dancing in the rain. It’s a memory that I’ll never forget and I have a picture too! It too will be a part of the Somewhere In Time series eventually – it’s just not ready yet. I should also mention that Brigida speaks basic English and Gina doesn’t speak any. We don’t speak Italian. Looking back, I can’t remember any language difficulties and the conversation always flowed but I’m not even sure how.

This photo was taken in their living room. About 10 mins prior to this Gina decided to call my Auntie Adele (my father’s sister) in the States. Adele is one of the few Italian speakers in our family and her and Gina talk regularly. I remember I was sitting on the couch with Randy and Gina was sitting in the exact same spot as the photo talking on the phone. I heard some scuffling and I thought Gina was laughing at something with my aunt. I couldn’t understand the conversation so I had no idea what they were talking about. Then I looked up and saw that Gina was crying. Not just little tears but big, sad, heavy tears. Brigida told me they were talking about their husbands – both who have passed away. Gina was crying, my Auntie Adele was also crying, Brigida started crying and then I started crying. I couldn’t watch as people I loved cried across continents and not cry myself. In an instant, I felt overwhelmingly sad – I missed my Uncle Ben and I knew that Gina & Brigida missed Emilio immensely. After a few minutes, we all collected themselves and stopped crying. Which was good for everyone and especially good for Randy. It’s one thing for me to sit and cry with people I am related to – even if I’ve met them only once before but for Randy it’s a totally different ballpark. He hasn’t heard stories of Uncle Emilio, he hasn’t spent an entire childhood with one of my favorite uncles – Uncle Ben. He’s not Italian – he’s not used to the crazy dinners, eat until you can’t eat anymore, the big laughs & big cries of the typical overly emotional Italian family. Italians and Italian-Americans are very genuine -they don’t hold their emotions back in any sense. My father can’t even read his birthday cards in public -and by that I mean around the kitchen table. He gets too emotional so he actually takes them into the bathroom or his office, shuts the door and reads them. Then he saves them. FOREVER.

I felt bad for Randy that we were all suddenly crying out of nowhere and he was trapped on the couch not knowing what to do or even what was going on. As usual, he handled it like a champ. I’m telling you if you go to Italy and you happen to be Italian be prepared. The emotions are going to hit you at some point. There is no escaping it. If you are visiting family you might as well buy stock in Kleenex before you go. It’s just the way it is. After the crying stopped Brigida had decided that it was the perfect time to shake things up by bringing their homemade Nocino onto the scene. This was a welcomed relief for everyone and we all took sips of this grow-hair-on-your-chest-in-two-seconds liquor. Nocino is made from unripened walnuts and this stuff is intense! Seriously, I could barely get down more than a sip. It is very, very strong. This particular bottle was made 10 years ago and you can see a little goes a far way. They were extremely proud of their homemade Nocino and it lightened the mood instantly. I took this photo as Brigida was explaining to us what Nocino was made of. By that point even Gina was back to her smiling, beautiful self, thinking of happy memories before Emilio died when they all made the Nocino together. In a strange way this is a little family portrait of them all.

Yellowstone syndrome comes on fast. The minute you drive into Yellowstone National Park you feel life slow down. Somewhere between the enormous pine trees, the roaming buffalo & the fog that rises out of the bubbling thermal pools you start to feel the worries of life leave your system.

It relaxes and unwinds you in the blink of an eye. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to get away from it all and see the grand spectacle of nature. Life really is different in the National Parks and Yellowstone is one of the grandest.

I just realized it was just one year ago that we rolled through Yellowstone on the drive from California to Massachusetts. We camped in Yellowstone for one night but we needed a week.

If you need to unwind Yellowstone is the perfect place to do it. Just be sure to leave yourself at least a few days to wander around, search for buffalo and take it all in.

It seems to happen frequently. I find myself dwelling about our brief days in Venice. What was it about that place? I just can’t seem to get it out of my head. If I close my eyes (yes, I know this sounds cheesy) I can hear it, see it and smell it.

Like she’s RIGHT there.

I think it’s just the type of place you visit and you fall in love with. Then it just never leaves you. Kinda like the one that got away. You always remember something special about it but what you really remember is how you felt when you were hanging out together.

A couple weeks ago I did a very large photo essay – Venice After Dark. It’s probably my favorite photo essay yet – if you haven’t seen it definitely take a gander over and check it out. It’s my version of Venice at night – steamy, dark, mysterious.

What’s been interesting about it that photo essay is reading the comments. It seems that a lot of people feel the same way I do about Venice. Whether their trip was last year or 30 years ago they remembered the city clearly. Most importantly, everyone seems to have strong feelings about just how much they loved it, how much they miss it and how badly they want to go back.

There was one comment in particular that I really loved. Carol hit the nail on the head when she left this one and I felt, after reading it, that I was right there walking beside her and watching her life unfold.

“I was in Venice in my 20′s with beau on arm dressed like Katherine Hepburn and walking the streets like I was the queen of style. It was so long ago and Venice has not changed (except for the plastered billboards). I would give anything to walk those streets 40 years ago again and giving my glorious smile full of a vitality that only that city can give.”

Thank you so much Carol for leaving that comment. I don’t think anything I could write anything that would sum it up with such clarity.

So the photo in this post? That’s Venice from above. I took this photo from the top of the Campanile in St. Mark’s Square right around sunset. It was taken just moments after I took this photo – Sunset At The Campanile – which was a different Somewhere In Time photo published in April.

Whatever you do in this life, do what you can to get to Venice.

At some point in your life you’ll want and need to be a part of her. There is some crazy magic happening in those streets.

This photo was taken through a car windshield during the pouring rain on the Mass Pike in Massachusetts. The colors you see are lights from the cars ahead reflected in the rain drops. This picture is simple yet abstract and quickly becoming one of my favorites. The colors kind of remind me of some of my favorite Mark Rothko paintings. I can sit and stare at it for a long time and always see something different depending on my mood. It lets me get lost in it and for that I love it.

Maybe it’s the summer weather or maybe it’s just all the craziness that has been surrounding my life the past couple of months. Maybe it’s just the simple fact that I want to go back a couple years (ok, 10 yrs would be great) to simpler times. Don’t get me wrong. I am happy with the changes I’ve made in my life, I’m happy with where I am. It’s just the other stresses of life have been getting to me lately. The things that go along with getting older – parents aging and such. Things you can’t control.

The past couple of months have found me drifting back to the days on our sailboat in San Diego. I’ve been feeling wistful for those days and wishing I could go back and live on the boat in what was a very simple life. Simple because when you live on a 27′ sailboat with another person and a dog you pare down to the basics pretty quick and that’s great for de-stressing.

I bought the sailboat when I was going through a really difficult time in my life. After being diagnosed with cancer at 31 I just wanted to float away. I was really craving a new life and didn’t know what to do about it. So I bought a sailboat. I hadn’t sailed a day in my life, yet I thought I would someday sail to South America. After the first sail I realized that was an insane idea but it was the dream of doing something new that led me to the boat. Which led to simpler times  – which was exactly what I needed.

The sailboat provided a more bare-bones life, a community, new friends who took us sailing, fixed our engine and shared laughs. Trading was a popular form of currency on the docks – I give you this, you give me that. Easy right?

I loved going to bed as the waves lulled me to sleep. I loved the fact that the only TV we had was the laptop, which meant we listened to a lot more music. I loved that there was no real place to cook, which strangely inspired me to cook more often. I loved having coffee on the deck as the fog lifted over the San Diego Bay in the chilly mornings. I loved the little ducks that swam around the boat. I loved hanging towels out to dry on the dock lines. After a peaceful wake up each morning I hung out with my dog, worked on my wedding photos, the blog & with my parents remotely. Waking up on the big blue ocean every morning was something that never got old.

Sure there were some stressful times, we weren’t expert sailors and we learned by trial and error but the good days were really, really good. We would load up the boat with fruit, sandwiches, sunblock, friends & beer. Lots of beer. Off we would go parading our little home around the San Diego Bay, catching the wind, bouncing off waves, cannonballing off the deck into the Pacific.

This photo was taken on one such day. Four of us had gone out for a fantastic sail and the heavy clouds started rolling in as the sun was setting brightly against the horizon. We were getting ready to dock and we were scurrying around the deck trying to drop the sails and get the lines ready. The light streaming through the clouds onto the sail caught my eye and I took a few photos of people running around making last minute adjustments. I love this photo because I love the light and because it really reminds me of exciting yet simple times.

Living with only what you need is something I highly recommend everyone does at least once in their lives. Whether it’s a backpack, an RV, a boat – whatever it is just go small for a while. Get rid of everything and you’ll be surprised how much happier you are when you have very little left to worry about. It’s pretty easy at that point to discover what is really the most important to you in life. It’s equally easy to notice all the things that were previously holding you down. Things you don’t even realize – like a large collection of shoes & electric bills. Life on the boat proved to me that less really is more.
