We have a few big announcements coming up that we can’t wait to tell you about and the first one is that we are pleased to share is the announcement of our newest press trip – We Are Going To Maui!!!

The Maui Tourism Board has invited us on a press trip from June 21 – 25th and we couldn’t be more excited!

Maui is a dream destination for both of us and it’s going to be amazing to check out all the best that the island has to offer and share that with you!

We both grew up on the East Coast where Hawaii is a far-flung tropical destination that you spend your winters & summers dreaming about. If you live there I’m sure you can relate. It’s further away than Europe and unlike anything in New England – that’s for sure! We grew up dreaming about Hawaii – imagining the beautiful weather and the laid back vibe &  atmosphere of island life. We’ll be staying in Hawaii for a couple days after the press trip is over so we can relax a bit (I’m thinking snorkeling & swimming) and catch up on any last minute photos or interviews we might have missed.

Randy has never been to any of the Hawaii Islands and I have only been to Hawaii once so this is going to be a big treat for us! A few years ago I ran the Honolulu Marathon with Team in Training but I was only in Oahu for about 4 days and spent most of those days in some sort of running state – either preparing to run, running or recovering from the run so I didn’t get to see very much. What I do remember though is the perfect weather, the amazing large, lush leaves of the vegetation and that the water was always the perfect temperature for swimming. I really can’t wait to return! Randy is actually afraid to go because he feels that he won’t want to come back!

I don’t have the full itinerary yet so I’m not sure what type of activities we’ll be doing but I do know that for 2 days of the press trip we will be on our own in our own rental car. It is up to us what we want to do and we just need to let the tourism board know and they will set it all up for us.

I’ve been looking up some different activities and as it turns out there are a million and one things to do in Maui. Honestly I had no idea that there were so many things to do there – it’s hard choosing one over the other! Out of the several things I’ve seen there are a few that I really want to check out:

• The Road to Hana – This is one of the most scenic drives in the world and is definitely going to be on our list.

• Haleakala National Park – I love the U.S. National Parks and I’ve read Haleakala is home to the largest amount of endangered species – more than any other National Park! I think a hike here is a must do for our itinerary and I’m already thinking about the photo possibilities!

• Lahaina – Lahaina seems to be the ‘it’ spot for nightlife & shopping so it’s also going on the list as a must see. Plus in San Diego there is a little bar called Lahaina which is located on the sands in Mission Beach right near where we used to live. During our San Diego days we’ve spent many a happy hour watching the sunset there so we have to see first hand the true namesake of that great SD bar.

• Maui Farm Tour – There are SO many farms (pineapple, coffee, botanical gardens just to name a few) in Maui. I absolutely love farms & would love to see the inner workings. It would be such a treat to get a guided tour through one of the farms!

• Lomilomi Massage – According to Wikipedia “Lomilomi is a holistic healing tradition beyond simple massage”. It’s a uniquely Hawaiian practice that has evolved over hundreds of years throughout the islands. While there are many different techniques it seems that it has one thing in common – it is performed as a healing practice (involving herbs & prayer) rather than a luxury massage. One of the most unique things about it is that it was banned for as a superstitious method of healing for over 100 years. It then became an ‘underground’ healing practice and only recently in 2001, was legislation passed that allowed native practitioners to become certified and practice Lomilomi without persecution under Hawaiian state law. Of course, I’d be excited just to a massage of any kind but this one really takes the cake and sounds like a truly Hawaiian experience.

• Paniolo of Maui – These are the famous cowboys of Maui and I love cowboys so a visit to see them in action would be pretty cool.

As you can see the list is getting quite large and this is where you come in!

While we are the ones going on this great trip, the reality is that the it is really all about you! It’s our job to provide you with great information about things to do & see in Maui so we’re looking for your suggestions to help create our itinerary!

Where should I start?

This view of Boston is pretty nice – especially for a view from a hospital room. I think my dad got lucky when he transferred to this Cadillac of rooms at Mass General Hospital a couple days ago.

Life has been tough lately. I realize most people who read this blog don’t know what’s going on in our personal lives all the time. The last year, while filled with plenty of travel, has been one of the toughest in my life. In fact, the only year that comes close to this type difficulty was when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a few years ago. That year was pretty devastating but this year has actually been harder because I’ve been living under the fear that I could lose one of the most important people in my life – my dad.

Last summer my dad spent 10 weeks in the hospital for a variety of ailments – mostly stemming from an infection he had – a really nasty infection that almost took his life. We spent almost all of our waking time at the hospital by his side. After several surgeries and two and a half months of hospitalization, he thankfully recovered and then he spent another 6 weeks in rehab. During all this his kidneys took a hit, we were told he had end stage renal failure and he ended up on dialysis.

My dad is a lot tougher than he looks though and despite the doctors telling him that he would never get off dialysis, with a combination of strict dieting and acupuncture, he did. Things were starting to look up and I remember him crying as he told me that he was off dialysis. We were all relieved. It felt like maybe after months of fearing that we would lose him, life could go back to normal again and he would get better.

After that, Randy & I left for Europe. Things were good at home for the most part but I during the trip was haunted with anxiety and horrible dreams about his health. Mentally I had not recovered from the fear of losing him. When we came back in December everything was great – dad was doing really well and looked better than any of us had seen in a long time.

Then January rolled around and everything changed again. He has been hospitalized three times since January and this last hospitalization has really taken its toll.

Two weeks ago we took a drive to Cape Cod and he ended up confused, freezing and weak. In the convenience store, he stumbled around grasping my arm and the snack aisle for balance as we lumbered towards the bathroom. His eyes were blank and it was scary. We drove home as quickly as we could and as he walked inside he collapsed but we all held him up and got him to the bed. He said he wanted to take a nap. Afterwards he was fine and back to normal – at dinner we were all joking around but he couldn’t remember anything that had happened earlier. It was bizarre but we concluded it must’ve been low blood sugar. A day later he was admitted to Mass General Hospital for an infection that had apparently been raging for quite some time, in his right foot. The infection unfortunately had spread into the bone and in an attempt to prevent it from spreading into his blood they had to amputate his foot.

By the time you read this article they will have taken his leg (up to the knee) as well.

It’s been a devastating two weeks due mainly to the shock of this drastic step that no one anticipated.

Overall my dad is doing much better now. We spend just about every day with him trying to keep his spirits happy because he is having a very hard time with it all. We just need to get through this surgery so we can start rehab. Complicating things is the fact that the last two times he has been put under he has fallen into a coma. One of those times he was in a coma for 3 weeks and the doctors didn’t think he would make it. Anesthesia and him just don’t mix. As a family we have been paranoid of him ever going under again and all the surgeries he has had in the past year have been done with a local block – he was never put under.

It would be an understatement to say that I’m not absolutely paranoid about the next 24 hours. I’m terrified – thinking that I might not see him again. I feel sick to my stomach over it and I can’t sleep. The one positive thing is that Mass General is an awesome hospital and they actually invented anesthesia. We’ve shown them the paperwork and told them of his allergies and issues. If any hospital can see him through this I’m sure it’s this one. We have no other choice but to go through with this next surgery so there isn’t anything else we can do but hope & pray at this point that everything will be okay. It’s so scary knowing that tomorrow he is going under and there isn’t anything I can do about it but kiss him and tell him that I love him. I hate this and I can’t even imagine what he is going through mentally.

Dealing with the amputation is another set of emotional & financial issues that we need to face after the surgery. My parents are self employed. We’ve been told it could be anywhere for 4 – 12 months for him to recuperate and work again. Because of all the medical issues from last year we are forced at this point to put our family home on the market and try to sell it before they lose it. All of this has been such a stress  – the hospitalizations, the amputation, the anesthesia and now the house.

Everything has changed in the blink of an eye.

We’re a very close family and I know we’ll get through this. So many people (apparently over 2 million in the US) are amputees and they have great lives. We can only hope for the best tomorrow and then deal with the life changes after that. It’s going to be a long road but I know we’re going to make it through to the other side. It’s been a really hard year and I’m hoping this is rock bottom – right now it sure feels like it is. I pray that things will start to get better after this.

As drastic as this is, I’m hoping that this surgery will rid him finally of whatever infection has been plaguing him for the past year and that he can finally get back to living life.

Hopefully tomorrow at this time he’ll be awake & recovering. Then we can all breathe a huge sigh of relief. Right now, the fear of the anesthesia is worse than the fear of losing the leg – at least for me. I hope next week at this time he’ll be healing in rehab and getting ready for the next phase of his life. We need to be at the hospital for 5am tomorrow – I’m anxious, I’m tired and I can’t sleep. But I’m thankful that at the very least, my dad gets this great view of Boston to help with his recovery.

Beth and I love winter, especially a good New England snow storm. However, by the time mid-March rolls around and we get our first taste of the warm, sunny days ahead, we are more than happy to say goodbye to winter.

A couple of weeks ago I completed my first solo journey from Temecula to Denver by car. Of course, in the 21st century that isn’t a really hard or amazing feat (its no Lindbergh Flight), but that doesn’t take away from the beauty of the journey.

The road trip itself is really simple: Interstate 15 to Interstate 70. At 65 mph the trip took about 17 hours, and I spread out the drive over a two day period, spending the night in Richfield, Utah, a small town off of I-70 in Utah. Like Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit, I had to make a delivery in set a time, in this case it was Beth’s 1999 Hyundai Elantra and the recipient was her younger sister, Kate.

It was a fun drive, but I would be lying if I didn’t miss having my two co-pilots, Beth and Chachy (our dog). Prior to leaving on the trip, I got the new iPhone 4s so everything I shot came from the Hipstamatic App with the exception of the photos that I’m featured in, which I used Instagram because it can utilize the iPhone’s front facing camera.

New York is a city that has something to offer no matter what time of year you visit. Depending on what you want out of your holiday however, there are more suitable times to travel, so pick the season that best suits you before booking your New York holidays. Here are the best times of year to visit, based on how you want enjoy your trip.

Theatre junkies – October to December

Internationally renowned for it’s theatre, New York is a must-see for fans of the stage. Most Broadway shows open in the Autumn so it’s a popular time of year for travellers with cultural inclinations. The sheer variety of shows on offer ensures something for everyone, ranging from opera to musicals, from classic theatre to contemporary dance. Keep in mind that the pre-Christmas season is the busiest and therefore most expensive time to visit New York, so account for this and make sure you have plenty of extra spending money. Expect to pay top dollar for accommodation too.

Holidaymakers on a budget – January to March

Post-Christmas, the price of accommodation in New York drops significantly, making it a more viable option for people on a tight budget. Travelling in January also allows you to take advantage of the holiday sales, so you can pick up gifts and souvenirs at a fraction of their normal price. Many of the shows on Broadway will still be running but with less demand it should be much easier to get tickets. The biggest disadvantage to travelling this time of year is that New York is very, very cold in winter, so bring plenty of warm clothing and don’t be too disappointed if the weather prevents you from visiting certain attractions. If the last two New York winters are anything to go by, you may have a few feet of snow to contend with.

Sun worshippers – July and August

July and August are New York’s hottest months, with temperatures regularly over 30 C. The city is stunning in the bright sunshine and there’s the opportunity to take in open air concerts and fine outdoor dining well into the evening. Many locals take their holidays outside of the city during summer so the centre is less packed, making for a more relaxed atmosphere. If you’re not used to the heat it’s best to wander around the city in the evening or early morning, as midday temperatures, coupled with the high humidity, can make being outdoors quite unpleasant.

Every season has something great to offer and regardless of when you visit, New York is sure to excite and entertain you.

It looks like we’ll be headed back to Europe soon and I’ve been doing some research on events we could check out. I immediately remembered one that’s been on my hit list for some time – La Tomatina.

I’ve been wanting to go to this for several years now and I’m sad to say we won’t make it because it takes place this month on Wed, August 31, 2011 and we won’t be in Europe until late Sept/early October. Bummer! In any case it looks like a pretty awesome festival and if you’re in the area there is still enough time for you to check it out.

La Tomatina is a huge event held in Buñol, Spain on the last Wednesday of each August. For exactly one hour people can throw tomatoes at each other in the streets! What started as a brawl between young men in the 1940′s is now a sanctioned event and the city even provides the tomatoes! Besides the absurdity and hilarity of tomatoes being thrown all across town at everyone within eyesight another really funny aspect of this festival is how it begins.

As with all good things, it all starts with a greasy pole & a ham.

A greasy pole is set up with a ham on top. One after the other brave participants try to reach the top of the greasy pole so they can knock the ham off. Once the ham is knocked off, the horn blows and the tomato throwing commences!

This festival is happening in just a few days! So if you can get to Buñol this week you’ll have one heck of a time waiting for you!

However if you’re a US resident or headed to the US this month there’s a chance you can still make it to La Tomatina – Reno Style! Yup, that’s right, the folks in the Biggest Little City (aka Reno, Nevada) were so into the idea of painting the town and residents red they decided a couple years ago to host their own La Tomatina! This event costs $10 to enter but a portion of the funds goes to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Not to mention they haul in 75,000 pounds of tomatoes you can chuck around town.

In pure American fashion you’ll need to sign a waiver to enter this festival even if you’re over 18. Don’t let the red tape get you down though, if I was on the west coast I would definitely head over and partake in this festival. It sounds like a really entertaining way to spend your day!

This event takes place in just a couple days on August 27, 2011 at 5pm. If you’re flying to Spain or Reno from London for either festival, remember that you can always take advantage of airport parking and Gatwick parking at the Gatwick airport for quick, last minute departures!

I have not be able to confirm that the greasy pole and ham will make an appearance at the Reno event.

Travel Tip: Prior to firing tomatoes upon your fellow festival goers remember to squash the tomatoes in your own hands first to prevent injury. Also, goggles are recommended for both festivals. Because both festivals are a photographer’s playground make sure you cover up your camera in a zip lock bag or waterproof casing to prevent tomato juice from ruining your good time!

Yellowstone syndrome comes on fast. The minute you drive into Yellowstone National Park you feel life slow down. Somewhere between the enormous pine trees, the roaming buffalo & the fog that rises out of the bubbling thermal pools you start to feel the worries of life leave your system.

It relaxes and unwinds you in the blink of an eye. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to get away from it all and see the grand spectacle of nature. Life really is different in the National Parks and Yellowstone is one of the grandest.

I just realized it was just one year ago that we rolled through Yellowstone on the drive from California to Massachusetts. We camped in Yellowstone for one night but we needed a week.

If you need to unwind Yellowstone is the perfect place to do it. Just be sure to leave yourself at least a few days to wander around, search for buffalo and take it all in.

Beyond the notorious avenues of Tijuana and the eternal spring-break atmosphere of Rosarito, lies a stretch of coastline devoid of Ralph’s, sprawling suburbs and rush hour traffic jams–imagine San Diego in the early 1900s. Baja California Norte’s long, sparse sections of undeveloped coastline are complimented by small, seaside villages, some no bigger than a cantina and a hotel. Part of Baja’s allure has always been that the dollar goes a bit further south of the border, and these three coastal villages are no exception.

For a village the size of a shopping center, La Fonda has a lot to offer for San Diegans who want a relaxing getaway. Just 40 miles from the San Yisdro border crossing, La Fonda’s seaside restaurants and bars provide an ideal backdrop for mid-day margaritas. The small costal village is a perfect spot for budget-conscious travelers and families who enjoy fine dining and oceanfront rooms, but don’t want to have to take out a second mortgage to do it. Ocean view rooms can be had for under $100 a night, and if you want to go even cheaper, La Fonda also has a campground (no hook ups), which costs between $15 and $23.

Puerto Nuevo

If Rosarito is Tijuana’s younger, dumber sister, then Puerto Nuevo is their chill aunt. Founded in the late 1950s by a few fishing families, Puerto Nuevo is the place to go for fresh, cheap lobster. Just 50 minutes from downtown San Diego, Puerto Nuevo’s main draw is its abundance of fresh lobster served up in traditional Puerto Nuevo style—pan-fried with a side of rice, beans and tortillas. There are more than 30 restaurants in Puerto Nuevo, including the village’s first eatery, Puerto Nuevo 1.

La Salina Beach

The best way to find La Salina is to follow the white highway markers to kilometer 71; keep your eyes sharp, though, because it is easy to pass right by this little slice of paradise. While developers have built up the nearby marina, the hallmark of La Salina Beach is still its lone cantina and hotel. Overlooking a huge sandy beach, the cantina offers good, but cheap, food and drinks as well as a deep jukebox and pool table. Above the cantina are a handful off rooms, ranging from $45-$65 (WiFi included). The rooms are spacious and each one has a balcony overlooking the beach.

Know Before You Go

1. Do not drive at night if you don’t have to. The likelihood of encountering bandits or hitting a roaming cow increases after sundown.

2. Each of the aforementioned villages gladly excepts U.S. Currency, so there is no need to exchange your money.

3. When driving in Mexico it is always a good idea to get Mexican Insurance. You are required by law to have Mexican insurance, and not complying can be costly and include jail time. It’s just not worth the risk. Coverage costs vary, but it tends to average around $20 a day for basic coverage. Insurance policies can be bought in San Ysidro or online.

This photo was taken through a car windshield during the pouring rain on the Mass Pike in Massachusetts. The colors you see are lights from the cars ahead reflected in the rain drops. This picture is simple yet abstract and quickly becoming one of my favorites. The colors kind of remind me of some of my favorite Mark Rothko paintings. I can sit and stare at it for a long time and always see something different depending on my mood. It lets me get lost in it and for that I love it.
