The Fun Stuff!
Ok, not really. This is the boring (visas, insurance) and painful (shots) but necessary stuff. Really, I hate this page, everytime I look at it I wonder how we are ever even going to get on the road with all the pre-departure spending we have to do.
Shots – There’s a LOT of them !!
- Hepatatis A & B – we should be able to get this thru the county for $10 each – $40 total
- Typhoid – hopefully we’ll get the pills which should be about $70 each – $140 total
- Tetanus Boosters – about $60 each – $120 total
- Yellow Fever – 1 shot, roughly $105 each – $210 total
- Menangitis – 1 shot each, $110 – $220 total
- Polio Booster – 1 shot each, $65 each – $130 total
- Japanese encephalitis – 3 shots needed, about $120 each – $720 total - We’re on the fence with this one due to the price. But I’m leaning towards playing it safe. Since we’ve got an open route planned we don’t want to be limited just because we didn’t get the shot in advance.
- Rabies – 3 shots needed, $200 each, Beth only. – $600 total. We’re on the fence with this one too but since I love animals so much it seems like a good idea for me to get it so I don’t have to freak out everytime I pets a stray I meets along the way.
Grand Total: $2180
Is it just me or does that seem absurd??!! I’ve shopped around and haven’t seen anything much cheaper so we really have to decide what to do with the Rabies and the Japanese Encephalitis in order to keep the budget down. Plus this isn’t even taking into consideration the Malaria pills we’ll have to bring along.
Travel Insurance:
We’ve been researching different companies and although we haven’t quite decided yet, this again looks like another 1k each deal. We don’t need to be covered for everything under the sun but we need to make sure we can get medical attention or get back to the U.S. if we have an emergency. Since I have recently learned the importance of medical insurance this is not an area that we are willing to risk. Additionally I will have to keep my U.S. insurance valid
Grand Total: $3500 including U.S. insurance for Beth.
Eeeks….
Does anyone want to sponsor us yet???

Cool, found what i was looking for.

I think you are really spelling it out – this will make an awesome resource for those thinking of heading down south
Sounds exciting! I like the tip about not speaking Spanish at all. I found the same thing when I tried to speak Russian abroad, they would attempt to ask more questions and such. Very annoying.

Very good points. Mexico sounds tough to drive through. But if people follow your points, I think that it can be done safely. Thanks for sharing, we have always had this romantic dream about driving from Toronto through to Central America. Maybe we will get around to it one day with you as inspiration!

I appreciate the time you took to put your post together. I’ve been trying to detective work this for a while that’s how I came accross your site. It seems like there is so much conflicting things around. Other than your own understanding do you have other resources that you’ve been able to put together? In any case I’ve bookmarked this post so I can follow the thread.
I can’t figure out how to subscribe to the comments via feed . I want to keep up to date on this, how do I do that?
