One Year Away. One backpack each.
“It’s only after you’ve lost everything that you’re free to do anything.”
- Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club
With this idea in mind we’re both really looking forward to minimizing our lives and carrying the only things we truly need on our backs. There is a freedom that comes from not being tied to anything and after filling up a cottage with furniture, clothes, artwork & video games we’re ready to be rid of it for a while and get back to basics. For starters – we’re packing as lightly as possible. The bulk of our packs will probably be filled with gear rather than clothes. We’re trying to keep the packs as small as possible so we don’t have to worry about checking them on planes, etc.
Here’s our current packing list:
Clothes: Gear:
2 pair fast dry pants & 1 pair of shorts 1 lightweight laptop
2 short sleeved shirts, 1 tank top 2 Ipod Nanos
1 long sleeved shirt & silk undershirt 1 SLR digital Camera w/ lense
5 pair of underwear, 3 pairs of socks 1 point & shoot digital camera
1 Fleece jacket and 1 small hat each 1 small video cam., microphone
1 pair of hiking shoes & sandals each 1 Pacsafe or similar
1 pair of shower flip flops (to share) Camera equipt. (tripod, etc)
1 bandana Small notebook, bus. cards
Bathroom Supplies: A world map, guidebooks
2 toothbrushes, toothpaste Small address book
Face wash, moisturizer, bug spray 1 small knife, 1 small flashlight
Diva cup, mini first aid kit, asp. & meds 1 outlet converter
2 razors, small shampoo & conditioner Vaccination records 1 quick drying towel each Pocket translator
1 silk sleep sheet each Memory Cards
We’re also contemplating a small, external hard drive to back up files and photos along the way. With all the work we’re doing along the way it would be awful if we destoyed or lost our laptop with all the info on it. We’re skipping out on the traditional money belt since we’ll pre-sew interior pockets into our pants before we leave. We’re also planning on purchasing backpacks with removable daypacks included so we can zip them off when we head off to explore new cities and towns.
Cool, found what i was looking for.

I think you are really spelling it out – this will make an awesome resource for those thinking of heading down south
Sounds exciting! I like the tip about not speaking Spanish at all. I found the same thing when I tried to speak Russian abroad, they would attempt to ask more questions and such. Very annoying.

Very good points. Mexico sounds tough to drive through. But if people follow your points, I think that it can be done safely. Thanks for sharing, we have always had this romantic dream about driving from Toronto through to Central America. Maybe we will get around to it one day with you as inspiration!

I appreciate the time you took to put your post together. I’ve been trying to detective work this for a while that’s how I came accross your site. It seems like there is so much conflicting things around. Other than your own understanding do you have other resources that you’ve been able to put together? In any case I’ve bookmarked this post so I can follow the thread.
I can’t figure out how to subscribe to the comments via feed . I want to keep up to date on this, how do I do that?
