Coney Island Fun Facts Pictorial.

By Posted in - New York City & U.S.A. on June 25th, 2012

Coney Island is a place that every American is familiar with one way or another – it’s been featured in books, movies & TV shows. We had always wondered about Coney Island  so on our recent trip to New York City we decided to swing by. Neither one of us had been there before and it’s such an iconic part of American history and since we were so close by we just couldn’t resist the urge. Sadly, the grand opening of the amusement park was the next day so it was very quiet. It also started raining while we were there which added to the lonely honky tonk atmosphere.

We both enjoyed it there (and Randy even got a hot dog at the infamous Nathan’s!) and one thing I really liked was that right on the boardwalk, behind the New York Aquarium (which is the oldest aquarium in the country), there is a huge mural painted with underwater themes. It’s a beautiful mural and I loved that throughout it, the artist interspersed facts about the history of Coney Island and New York. The colors were so brilliant I decided to shoot an impromptu Iphone photo essay of the mural.

I hope you enjoy this pictorial of historical travel fun facts in bold, beautiful hues.

I love all kinds of Coney Island art! Can they be categorized that way? Very colorful and whimsical, with a retro appeal to it.

@Ryan at Travel and Graphs, Thanks Ryan! Don’t worry I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and this was only my second time to New York City. It’s definitely worth a trip though!

I’m heading to NYC next month, is it worth a trip to Coney Island?

@Ayngelina, I think it’s worth it, especially in August, which is when it probably shines the brightest.

I find a lot of beauty and nostalgia in Coney Island, but it’s far from glamorous. In fact, it’s more like one part honky tonk and many parts broke-down palace, in other words it’s my kind of paradise. With that said, I was really surprised about how nice the boardwalk and beach was.

Also, keep in mind that it’s a pretty good ride from Manhattan, and parking, especially in the summer months, is slim, so you are probably better off taking the metro in if you decide to go. It should take about an hour.
